Punjab Kings Co-Owner Preity Zinta Initiates Legal Proceedings Against Mohit Burman and Ness Wadia
In a shocking turn of events, Preity Zinta, co-owner of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Punjab Kings, has filed a lawsuit against her fellow co-directors, Mohit Burman and Ness Wadia, in a Chandigarh court. The dispute centres around an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held on April 21, which Zinta claims was marred by procedural irregularities.
According to a report by the Economic Times, Zinta has alleged that the EGM did not follow the necessary protocols outlined by the Companies Act, 2013, and other relevant secretarial regulations. The meeting, which was attended by Zinta and director Karan Paul, was convened to appoint a new director to KPH Dream Cricket Private Limited, the entity that owns Punjab Kings.
Zinta had previously expressed her concerns about the meeting in an email dated April 10, but claims that her objections were ignored. During the meeting, Zinta and Paul opposed the nomination of Muneesh Khanna as a new director, but Burman and Wadia proceeded with the proceedings nonetheless.
The Economic Times report states that Zinta is seeking a court declaration that the meeting was null and void, and that Khanna should not be allowed to assume directorial responsibilities. She has also requested that any decisions made during the meeting be put on hold, and that the company be restrained from conducting any board or general meetings without the presence of both Zinta and Karan Paul, and the exclusion of Muneesh Khanna, until the case is resolved.
It is worth noting that Punjab Kings have had a remarkable season in the IPL 2025, with the team qualifying for the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, the team is currently positioned third in the standings with 17 points from 12 matches, and is vying for a top-two finish. Their upcoming league matches include clashes against Delhi Capitals in Jaipur on May 24 and Mumbai Indians on May 26.
As per the Economic Times, Zinta’s lawsuit against Burman and Wadia is a significant development in the IPL, and raises questions about the governance and management of Punjab Kings. The court is yet to hear the case, and it remains to be seen how this dispute will be resolved.
In related news, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are expected to get a boost with the likely return of Josh Hazlewood for the IPL playoffs. Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans are still in the running for a top-two spot in the playoffs, despite their recent defeat to Lucknow Super Giants.
The dispute between Zinta, Burman, and Wadia is a significant distraction for Punjab Kings, who are looking to make a deep run in the playoffs. As the Economic Times notes, the team’s performance on the field has been impressive, but the off-field drama may have a bearing on the team’s morale and focus.
The case is set to be heard in the coming days, and it will be interesting to see how the court rules on Zinta’s petition. One thing is certain, however – the dispute between Zinta, Burman, and Wadia has thrown a spotlight on the governance and management of Punjab Kings, and has raised important questions about the administration of the IPL team.
As quoted in the Economic Times, Zinta’s concerns were clearly conveyed to the board before-hand and it will be interesting to see how this plays out in the coming days.
