Brendan Rodgers Refuses to Close Door on Greg Taylor’s Celtic Future
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has refused to rule out the possibility of Greg Taylor staying at the club beyond the Scottish Cup Final against Aberdeen on Saturday. The Scotland international’s future at Celtic Park has been the subject of speculation, with Taylor posting a cryptic message on Instagram after the club’s trophy day, suggesting that his time at the club may be coming to an end.
According to The Celtic Star, Rodgers revealed that he had a lengthy conversation with Taylor, in which he made it clear that the door was not closed on the player’s future at the club. "I had a long conversation with Greg yesterday," Rodgers said at his pre-match media conference. "The door’s not closed. I think probably both he and I just focus on the performance level of the team. And I think once the season’s over on Saturday then he’ll have a bit more thinking time with a lot more space to be able to do that."
Rodgers also expressed his desire to keep Taylor at the club, citing the player’s importance to the team and his ability to work alongside Kieran Tierney, who is set to return to the squad after a loan spell. "I would definitely say it’s not 100 per cent it’ll be his last game," Rodgers said. "I think I’ve put on record a number of times my keenness to keep him here, believing that it can work with him and Kieran being here with the number of games we have and the different types of games that we need to play."
As reported by The Celtic Star, Taylor has been a key player for Celtic since signing from Kilmarnock in 2019, consistently holding off competition from other players to retain his spot in the team. However, with Tierney’s return, Taylor’s game time may be under threat, and he may be looking to explore other options.
Rodgers acknowledged that Taylor’s decision would not be taken lightly, with the player having recently become a father and seeking a contract that would secure his future for the next four or five years. "Like every player, he recognises this is a big contract for him and a big contract in terms of that this will carry him for the next four or five years and at 27 that’s one of your last big contracts as a player," Rodgers said. "So everything has to be right. He’s become a father recently as well. So, there’s lots of things that he has to take care of on that side and I’ve always tried to respect that space that he’s needed for that."
The Celtic Star understands that Taylor’s contract negotiations are ongoing, with the player seeking a deal that reflects his importance to the team. Rodgers made it clear that he values Taylor’s contribution to the team and hopes that a resolution can be reached. "He’s loved his time here, he’s enjoyed playing and he’s a real part of what we’re doing here," Rodgers said. "So, hopefully it can find its way out to him being here but if not then we’ve lost a fantastic young player."
In conclusion, the future of Greg Taylor at Celtic remains uncertain, with Rodgers refusing to rule out the possibility of the player staying at the club. As reported by The Celtic Star, the player will have a lot to consider before making a decision, with his family and career prospects playing a significant role in his choice. Only time will tell if Taylor will be part of the Celtic squad next season.
