Crazy Rich Asians 2: The Long-Awaited Sequel
The highly anticipated sequel to the 2018 hit film Crazy Rich Asians has been in the works for several years, but its release has been delayed due to various reasons. According to reports, director Jon M. Chu was set to return for the sequel, but the project faced a setback when writer Adele Lim left the film due to an alleged pay disparity.
In 2019, Chu took to social media to address the issue, stating that he and the producers had attempted to rectify the situation by offering Lim a revised deal that would ensure parity with co-writer Peter Chiarelli. However, by the time a solution was reached, Lim had declined the offer. Chu expressed his admiration for Lim’s decision to stand up for her worth, saying she was "able to stand up for her own measure of worth and walk away when she felt like she was being undervalued."
The delay in the sequel’s production can also be attributed to the busy schedules of the cast and crew. Chu went on to direct other successful films, including In the Heights and Wicked, while actress Michelle Yeoh starred in the critically acclaimed Everything Everywhere All at Once, for which she won an Oscar. Author Kevin Kwan, whose novel the film is based on, told GMA in 2024 that the delay was due to the cast and crew’s busy schedules, saying "The amazing great thing is that everyone got so busy. It blew up the careers of Jon Chu and all the actors. Michelle won an Oscar. So they have to do a few amazing victory laps. But I think now everyone’s ready to get back and make Crazy Rich Asians 2."
According to E! Online, the sequel is still in the works, with Chu set to direct and Chiarelli on board as a writer. However, no official release date has been announced. Fans of the film have been eagerly awaiting news of a sequel, and with the cast and crew now seemingly available, it is hoped that production will soon get underway.
The original film, which was based on Kwan’s novel of the same name, was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $238 million worldwide. The film’s success can be attributed to its diverse cast, witty dialogue, and insight into the world of Singaporean high society. The sequel is expected to continue the story of Rachel Chu, played by Constance Wu, and Nick Young, played by Henry Golding, as they navigate their life together.
In an interview with E! Online, Kwan expressed his enthusiasm for the sequel, stating that he is eager to see the characters return on screen. The author also hinted that the sequel would explore new themes and storylines, saying that he has been working closely with Chu and the writers to ensure that the film stays true to the spirit of the original. With the cast and crew now in place, fans of the film are eagerly awaiting the release of Crazy Rich Asians 2.
The wait for Crazy Rich Asians 2 has been long, but with the busy schedules of the cast and crew now clearing up, it seems that production on the film will soon be underway. As E! Online reports, the film’s director and writers are in place, and with Kwan’s guidance, fans can expect a sequel that is just as delightful and charming as the original.
