Aurora Alert: Which States May Witness Spectacular Skies This Weekend?

Aurora Borealis to be Visible in Several US States Over the Weekend

A spectacular display of the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, is expected to be visible in several US states over the weekend, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The University of Alaska and NOAA track auroras using the Kp-index, a global auroral activity indicator which has a scale from 0 to 9. This measures the fluctuations in the Earth’s magnetic field, tied to specific geographic locations.

The Kp index, which measures activity in Earth’s magnetic field, is expected to peak during the weekend at 4.67, according to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. As reported by USA Today, several states in the northern US are forecast to have the finest views of the aurora borealis. These states include North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Michigan, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Washington, Idaho, and Montana.

States That May See Auroras Over the Weekend

The Space Weather Prediction Center has predicted that these northern states will have the best views of the aurora borealis over the weekend, provided the weather is clear. The aurora borealis is a natural phenomenon that occurs when charged particles from the sun interact with the Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere. The resulting display of coloured lights can be seen in the night sky, typically at high latitudes.

According to USA Today, the Earth’s magnetic field acts as a barrier, protecting us from the solar winds. However, stronger solar winds can disturb the magnetic field, producing gorgeous auroras when the planet’s magnetic field gases come into contact with the storm’s particle stream. Though uncommon, the display can be visible over Europe and the United States during primarily large auroral events. In fact, during a major event in 1958, the aurora could be seen from Mexico City, as reported by the University of Alaska.

NOAA’s Aurora Forecast

NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center provides a 3-day forecast for the aurora borealis, which can be viewed on their website. The forecast takes into account the Kp index, solar wind speed, and other factors that affect the visibility of the aurora. USA Today has reported that the Kp index is expected to peak at 4.67 over the weekend, making it an ideal time to view the aurora borealis.

Viewing the Aurora Borealis

For those hoping to catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis, it is recommended to find a location with minimal light pollution and a clear view of the northern horizon. The best viewing times are typically between 10pm and 2am, when the aurora is most active. USA Today has provided a map showing the states that may see auroras over the weekend, which can be viewed on their website.

The aurora borealis is a rare and spectacular display of natural beauty, and USA Today has reported that it may be visible in several US states over the weekend. By checking the NOAA forecast and finding a suitable viewing location, individuals can increase their chances of witnessing this breathtaking phenomenon.
