The Last of Us Season 3: Fans Face Long Wait as HBO Series Renews Post-Apocalyptic Drama
Fans of HBO’s acclaimed video game adaptation, The Last of Us, can expect a long wait for season three, according to reports. The show, which drew to a close its second season last week, had already been renewed for a third instalment ahead of the season two premiere.
The forthcoming season is expected to shift to Abby’s perspective, similar to the game. However, co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have admitted they are still unsure how much viewers can expect to see characters Ellie, Dina, Tommy, and Jesse in the next season.
According to The Independent’s source, Vulture, at a May 23 press conference, Mazin and Druckmann revealed they still haven’t completed writing the third season. This theory was further confirmed by Bella Ramsey, who recently told Variety that she hadn’t yet “seen any scripts.”

Asked whether her character would take on a smaller role in season three, Ramsey said: “I haven’t seen any scripts, but yes, I do expect that. I think I’m going to be there, but not a whole bunch. We’ve had conversations about that. I sort of have a rough idea of what it’s going to be, but I can’t tell you.”
Mazin also told Variety that fans haven’t seen the last of Kaitlyn Dever, Bella Ramsey, Isabela Merced, and other characters. “All I can say is we haven’t seen the last of Kaitlyn Dever and we haven’t seen the last of Bella Ramsey, and we haven’t seen the last of Isabela Merced, and we haven’t seen the last of a lot of people who are currently dead in the story,” he said.
Druckmann teased that although some characters may not be on screen, “their presence will be there throughout.”
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in April, Mazin assured fans that he has no intention of extending the show beyond the game’s storyline. “I’ll just say that flat out,” he said. “So if people are thinking, ‘Oh, these guys are planning the old cash grab thing…’ I’m basically setting a decade of my rapidly dwindling life on fire to tell this story. The show is so hard to make. It has to have an end. So I’m not going to go past.”
Mazin also suggested that a potential spin-off show might be made in the future by another filmmaker. “Who knows me, there might be a Dunk and Egg The Last of Us show that happens that somebody does,” he said, referring to the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on George RR Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg stories.
“But for me, the only question is: Is it going to be one more season or will it require two more? If this can happen all in one more season, great,” he said. “If we feel like it makes sense to break it into two, then we will do that.”
As confirmed by The Independent, The Last of Us has been renewed for a third season, with HBO looking to continue the post-apocalyptic drama. Fans will have to wait some time for the new season, but with Mazin’s commitment to staying true to the game’s storyline, viewers can expect an authentic and thrilling conclusion.
The show’s creators have promised an intense and emotional ride for fans, staying true to the spirit of the game while also expanding on its characters and storyline. HBO has yet to announce an official release date for season three, but with production likely to take some time, fans can expect a wait of at least a year or more.
