Roy Wood Jr. Skewers WH, CNN, Patti LuPone at Peabody Awards

Peabody Awards Celebrate Storytellers Who Risk and Illuminate Social Issues

The Peabody Awards, a prestigious honour in the world of entertainment, documentary, news, and podcasting, held its annual ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday night, celebrating 34 winners across various categories. The event was hosted by comedian Roy Wood Jr., who kicked off the night with a humorous monologue that touched on diversity and the challenges of telling the truth in today’s world.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wood Jr. joked, “Last year’s host was Kumail Nanjiani, so that is back-to-back years with a minority host. The Peabodys standing up for diversity, how about that? Which means in a few months, the White House will cut their funding and so they’ll have John Mulaney, that’s on y’all.” The ceremony honoured projects such as Baby Reindeer, Ripley, Shogun, and Will & Harper, showcasing the breadth of storytelling that reflects social issues and emerging voices.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, in his opening remarks, Wood Jr. acknowledged the stress of having to know all the horrible things going on in the world to tell the truth. “It’s hard to create stuff about terrible things without knowing all of the terrible things. It’s hard — that’s why I quit The Daily Show, it was too much stress,” he said. He then deadpanned, “I work at CNN now [with comedy show Have I Got News for You], I ain’t got to do nothing but plug Jake Tapper’s book.”

The ceremony featured a star-studded roster of presenters, including Aloe Blacc, Anna Kendrick, Andrew Lack, Benito Skinner, Indya Moore, Joel Kim Booster, Jurnee Smollett, Linda Perry, Mandy Moore, Marissa Bode, Michael Schur, Nava Mau, Niecy Nash, Randall Park, Stephen Merchant, Uzo Aduba, Van Jones, and Yvonne Orji. The Hollywood Reporter noted that Wood Jr. urged the winners to keep their acceptance speeches brief, joking, “We want your acceptance speeches tonight to be brief and full of sincerities that you don’t really mean, like an apology from Patti LuPone.”

The night also featured two special honours: the Peabody Institutional Award, given to Saturday Night Live, and the Career Achievement Award, given to Andrea Mitchell. The Hollywood Reporter quoted Jon Hamm, who presented the Institutional Award, saying, “The secret sauce of the show has always been holding up a mirror and reflecting America’s culture to us — politics, contradictions, all of it, right back at you.” Lorne Michaels, who accepted the award, noted that the show’s 50th anniversary was a moving experience, and that he was grateful to be able to do what he loves.

Andrea Mitchell, who received the Career Achievement Award, reflected on her early days in news and the progress women have made in the business. As The Hollywood Reporter reported, she said, “All of us journalists have to be fearless. It is no exaggeration to say that strong journalism, providing accurate information to the American people, is critical to the survival of our democracy. As Thomas Jefferson wrote to the continental Congress in 1787, ‘Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.'”

The Peabody Awards, as cited by The Hollywood Reporter, continue to recognise and celebrate storytellers who risk, investigate, create, and illuminate social issues and emerging voices. The ceremony was a testament to the power of storytelling and the importance of truth-telling in today’s world.

The awards ceremony was a significant event, highlighting the best in entertainment, documentary, news, and podcasting. As The Hollywood Reporter noted, the Peabody Awards are a prestigious honour, and this year’s ceremony was a fitting celebration of the winners and their outstanding work.
