Brentford FC Lands Kelleher in Shock Move from Liverpool

Brentford Signs Goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher from Liverpool

In a significant move, Brentford Football Club has announced the signing of goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher from Liverpool on a permanent deal. The Republic of Ireland international has put pen to paper on a five-year contract, with the club having an option to extend his stay by a further 12 months.

According to Brentford FC’s official website, Kelleher, a two-time Premier League winner, departs Liverpool having made 67 appearances across all competitions, keeping 24 clean sheets. Director of football Phil Giles expressed his delight in welcoming Kelleher to Brentford, stating, "I am very pleased to welcome Caoimhín to Brentford. We have scouted him in the past and were aware that he had a year to go on his contract with Liverpool this summer."

Giles further added, "When Mark Flekken had the opportunity to move to Bayer Leverkusen, we immediately thought about Caoimhín as his replacement. As well as being a very good goalkeeper, I’ve rarely met a player for whom everybody has such positive words to say about his personality and character. I’m therefore confident he’ll be an excellent addition to the squad." As reported by Brentford FC, First-team goalkeeper coach Manu Sotelo also shared his thoughts on Kelleher, saying, "Caoimhín is a young keeper full of talent who has already proven how he can perform in the Premier League as well as Europe."

Sotelo praised Kelleher’s agility, positioning, and awareness, stating, "He is calm and obsessed with improving. His best quality is his agility and he is a clever goalkeeper, with positioning and awareness being key elements of his game. With us, I’m confident he will achieve the next level in terms of performance and show the potential he has. I’m looking forward to working with him." The source also revealed that Kelleher joined Liverpool in the summer of 2015 from Ringmahon Rangers, progressing through the youth ranks before establishing himself as a member of the first-team squad.

Born in Cork, Kelleher has enjoyed a successful career with Liverpool, winning several trophies including the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and Carabao Cup. He made his competitive debut for the club in a 2-0 Carabao Cup victory against Milton Keynes Dons in 2019 and has since made 67 appearances for the Reds. According to Brentford FC’s official website, Kelleher has also represented his country at various levels, making his senior international debut in June 2021 in an international friendly away at Hungary.

To date, Kelleher has 22 caps and has played Ireland’s last 10 fixtures in all competitions. With this signing, Brentford has bolstered their goalkeeping ranks, and fans will be eager to see Kelleher in action for the Bees. As reported by Brentford FC, Kelleher’s experience and talent will undoubtedly be an asset to the team, and his signing is a significant coup for the club.
