Weight Loss Drugs Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro Share Five Major Side Effects
A recent report from LADbible has highlighted that three of the most popular weight loss drugs, Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, all share five major side effects that some people taking them may experience.
While virtually no drug is without side effects, and many people taking these medications will experience no problems at all, there will always be a small number of individuals who are unlucky and experience adverse reactions.
According to LADbible, Professor Giles Yeo previously noted that work would be done to identify "non-responders" who find the drugs don’t work for them, and "hyper-responders" who are most likely to have a side effect.
The three drugs in question – Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro – are all used to suppress a person’s appetite, resulting in weight loss. While Ozempic is not actually a weight loss jab and cannot be prescribed for that on the NHS, Wegovy and Mounjaro can be prescribed for weight loss.
LADbible reports that Ozempic and Wegovy are semaglutide-based drugs developed by Novo Nordisk, while Mounjaro’s main ingredient is tirzepatide.
Studies have shown that these drugs can have an impressive impact on weight loss. For example, people taking Wegovy experienced an average weight loss of 14.9 percent of their body weight over 68 weeks, while those on Mounjaro lost up to 22.5 percent of their body weight over 72 weeks.
However, LADbible notes that losing weight quickly can come with some problems, including the loss of muscle mass as well as fat.
Several celebrities have used these drugs and had varying degrees of success with them. For example, Jeremy Clarkson reported that he had not had a good experience with Ozempic, while Amy Schumer said she had been left "bed-ridden" by the drug but had a better experience with Mounjaro.
According to LADbible, the five most common side effects of Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro are:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Abdominal pain
Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, the company behind Mounjaro, have emphasized that patient safety is their top priority and recommend that people experiencing side effects contact their healthcare provider.
In a statement, Novo Nordisk said: "Patient safety is of the utmost importance to Novo Nordisk. Wegovy (semaglutide injection) and Ozempic (semaglutide injection) are prescription only medicines. Treatment decisions should be made together with a healthcare provider who can evaluate the appropriateness of using a GLP-1 based on assessment of a patient’s individual medical profile."
LADbible has contacted Eli Lilly for comment.
