Scam Alert: Fake DWP Agents Target Vulnerable

DWP Issues Scam Warning Over Texts Posing as Department

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a warning to people across the UK about scammers sending out text messages pretending to be from them. According to a report from the Manchester Evening News, the DWP has taken to social media to urge people to "be aware" of these scam texts and to take care when receiving unsolicited messages.

In a message posted on their social media account, the DWP warned: "Be aware of scam text messages claiming to be from @dwpgovuk. Always be careful about links and never share personal or financial details." The department also advised people to only engage with trusted official sources and to report suspicious messages to @actionfrauduk or search for the government’s website.

The Manchester Evening News reports that scammers often use a technique called phishing, which involves sending out unsolicited messages to large numbers of people in an attempt to steal money or personal data. These messages can be via email or text message and often appear to be from an authority figure, such as the DWP.

The DWP has previously warned people not to share personal details online, posting: "Protect yourself from online fraud. Keep your sensitive information off social media and out of Direct Messages." This information includes full names, dates of birth, National Insurance numbers, and answers to security questions.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the government’s Stop! Think Fraud campaign has warned that once obtained, a fraudster might go on to commit identity fraud – opening accounts in the victim’s name, taking control of their bank account, or applying for credit they have no intention of repaying.

If you suspect someone has got hold of information about you which they’re using to pose as you, the government advises acting quickly to protect your identity and ensure you’re not liable for any financial losses. The Manchester Evening News reports that this can include changing passwords and PINs, registering with Cifas – the UK’s fraud prevention community, reporting lost or stolen items to the organisation that issued them, telling your bank about unusual transactions, reporting any suspicious credit applications, and telling your bank if credit is taken out in your name.

The DWP’s warning comes as a timely reminder to be cautious when receiving unsolicited messages, especially those claiming to be from official government departments. As the Manchester Evening News reports, it’s essential to verify the authenticity of any message by directly contacting the department in question.

In summary, the DWP has issued a scam warning over texts posing as the department, and people are urged to be cautious when receiving unsolicited messages. The Manchester Evening News has reported that scammers often use phishing techniques to steal money or personal data, and people should take care to protect themselves from online fraud.
