Scotland’s Hidden Gems: Locations Uncovered from Edinburgh to East Lothian

Dept Q Filming Locations Revealed: A Haunting Scottish Backdrop

The new Netflix thriller series, Dept Q, has taken the top 10 by storm, captivating audiences with its gripping, haunting, and occasionally hilarious plot. Based on a series of novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen, the show follows Detective Morck as he investigates cold cases, including the disappearance of prosecutor Merritt Lingard, who vanished four years ago. According to Cosmopolitan, the series was primarily filmed in Scotland, with Edinburgh serving as the main location.

A Scottish Setting for a Gripping Thriller

The show’s creator, Scott Frank, decided to move the setting from Scandinavia to Scotland, choosing Edinburgh as the primary filming location. As Cosmopolitan reports, "The book series is originally based in Copenhagen, Denmark, however for the Netflix series the show’s creator Scott Frank moved it from Scandinavia to the heart of Scotland – Edinburgh." The series features a mix of real-life locations and sound stages, showcasing the city’s iconic landmarks.

Edinburgh: A City of Mystery and Intrigue

Cosmopolitan reveals that Dept Q was filmed on location in Edinburgh, using various real-life locations and sound stages. The show’s opening scene, which features Carl’s accident and the death of a fellow police officer, was filmed at the estate of The Calders in Wester Hailes. As the series progresses, iconic Edinburgh landmarks such as the cobbled streets of the Royal Mile, St Mary’s Episcopal church, and the City Chambers make appearances. The exterior of Carl’s home was filmed in the Leith area of Edinburgh, in Link’s Place.

Exploring East Lothian

While Edinburgh served as the primary filming location, the production crew also ventured into East Lothian to create additional scenes. Cosmopolitan reports that Lysander House in Dirleton was used to film Merritt and William’s impressive adult home, which is featured in the first episode. This historic house, once a military outpost and radar station, has been converted into a luxurious residence. Furthermore, Staggs Bar in Musselburgh was used to create the scene where Detective Morck and Akram meet with a journalist who badmouths Sam Haig.

Bringing the Story to Life

The filming locations play a crucial role in setting the tone and atmosphere of Dept Q. By choosing to film in Scotland, the production team has created a unique and haunting backdrop for the series. As Cosmopolitan notes, "Throughout the series many iconic Edinburgh landmarks also pop up including the cobbled streets of the Royal Mile, St Mary’s Episcopal church and the City Chambers where we see Merritt during the first episode working during trial."

Dept Q: A Must-Watch Thriller

Dept Q is now available on Netflix, offering viewers a gripping and suspenseful ride. With its unique blend of mystery, intrigue, and Scottish charm, it’s no wonder the series has captured the attention of audiences worldwide. As Cosmopolitan concludes, "Department Q is available on Netflix now."
