Challenge Cup Final Injury Gambles: A Risky Business for Hull KR and Warrington Wolves
As the Challenge Cup final approaches, both Hull KR and Warrington Wolves are facing crucial decisions regarding the fitness of their star players. Warrington’s George Williams and Hull KR’s Michael McIlorum are both set to play despite recent injuries, with some questioning the wisdom of such moves.
According to Loverugbyleague.com, Williams will take to the field less than eight weeks after undergoing ankle surgery, while McIlorum is set to return just six weeks after rupturing a bicep. Both players would be ahead of their original scheduled return dates, with McIlorum expected to be out for a significant period of over a month.
This is not the first time clubs have gambled with the fitness of a star player going into the cup final, and it doesn’t always go to plan. One notable example is Gavin Miller, who played for Hull KR in the 1986 Challenge Cup final despite suffering a hamstring injury. The Australian forward was taped up and deployed at 13, but it didn’t work out as planned. “I had a discussion with Roger [Millward], and we decided to do it,” Miller told League Express. “I was up all night, icing it, working on the leg. But if I had my time again, I wouldn’t play.”
Another example of a failed gamble is Lachlan Coote, who was rushed back from injury by the Saints in 2019. Coote wasn’t at his best, and the Saints were beaten by Warrington Wolves at Wembley.
In 2015, Hull KR’s Albert Kelly was named in the squad for the Challenge Cup final despite not having played for four weeks. However, he wasn’t his usual self, and Rovers were well beaten by Leeds.
St Helens’ Paul Sculthorpe also attempted to recover from injury in time to feature in the 2008 Challenge Cup final. He played the week before but wasn’t 100 per cent fit, and he injured his shoulder in the opening minutes of the match, which proved to be his final game as a professional.
Perhaps the most infamous gamble of all was Keith Senior’s decision to play for Leeds in the 2005 Challenge Cup final despite injuring his ankle just eight days earlier. Senior took pain-killing injections to be ready for the game, but it didn’t work out as planned. He was visibly off the pace in the first half and didn’t come back on after half-time.
“I’ve let myself down and I’ve let the team down,” Senior later reflected. “The ankle’s been well all week and in the warm-up everything seemed fine. In hindsight, it might not have been the best thing to do.”

However, history suggests that such gambles can be risky, and it remains to be seen whether Williams and McIlorum will be able to make a difference in the Challenge Cup final.
