Italy Stumbles as Norway Cruises to 3-0 Victory

Italy’s Woes Continue as Norway Inflict 3-0 Defeat in World Cup Qualifier

Italy’s struggles in international football continued as they suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Norway in their opening 2026 World Cup qualifier. The Azzurri, who have failed to qualify for the past two World Cups, are now fourth in Group I, although they have played two games fewer than the teams above them due to their involvement in the Nations League.

According to the BBC, Norway took control of the match with two goals from Alexander Sorloth and Antonio Nusa, before Arsenal playmaker Martin Odegaard set up Manchester City striker Erling Haaland to score a third – all before half-time. The hosts’ dominant performance left Italy reeling, and the visitors were unable to mount a comeback.

Italy’s manager, Luciano Spalletti, acknowledged that his side were in a “difficult moment” after the match. In comments reported by the BBC, Spalletti stated, “I am the head of this group, it is a squad I chose and so I continue with them. We need to improve in certain aspects, because we cannot give advantages to the opponents by gifting the ball.” The Italian manager’s words highlight the team’s struggles with possession and decision-making, which were evident throughout the match.

Italy’s captain, Gianluigi Donnarumma, was equally dismayed by the performance, saying he had “no explanation” for the team’s display. As quoted by the BBC, Donnarumma stated, “Our supporters don’t deserve this kind of match. We need to do some soul-searching. It’s unacceptable.” The Paris St-Germain goalkeeper’s comments underscore the frustration felt by the team and their fans.

The result leaves Norway top of Group I with nine points, while Israel are second on six points and Estonia are third on three points. Italy’s next match is against Moldova, who are bottom of their group with no points from two games, on Monday. The BBC reports that Spalletti is determined to address the team’s issues, saying it was a “difficult moment” and that there are “always worries” after a performance like that.

Spalletti, as cited by the BBC, added, “There are always worries, because after a performance like that, you clearly have to ask yourself questions and realise there are problems, but you have to face them, because there is no other possibility.” The Italian manager’s words suggest that he is committed to identifying and addressing the team’s weaknesses, and it remains to be seen how Italy will respond in their upcoming match against Moldova. One thing is certain, however: Italy must improve significantly if they hope to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
