Pixar Purrs: New Feline Film ‘Gatto’ Unveiled in Venice

Pixar Announces New Animated Feature Film ‘Gatto’ and Teases ‘Toy Story 5’
====================================================================================

Pixar Animation Studios has announced that it is in production on a new animated feature film titled ‘Gatto’, which is set to release in cinemas in summer 2027. The film was revealed by Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

‘Gatto’ is an animated feature film that follows the story of Nero, a black cat living in Venice, Italy, who cannot swim and must navigate a town filled with people who are superstitious about him. According to Docter, Nero aligns himself with “the seedier side of cat society”, where he finds himself indebted to a cat boss named Rocco. The film will be directed by Italian filmmaker Enrico Casarosa, who previously directed Pixar’s ‘Luca’.

The film’s storyline revolves around Nero’s love for music and his encounter with another outsider, a street musician named Maya. Docter stated that the film aims to “capture the painterly texture of Venice while still preserving the depth and dimension you’ve come to expect from Pixar.” The film’s concept art and footage were showcased at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, giving attendees a glimpse into the film’s unique visual style.

In addition to ‘Gatto’, Docter also teased ‘Toy Story 5’, which is set to release in cinemas in summer 2026. The film will follow the character of Bonnie, first introduced in ‘Toy Story 3’, who is now eight years old and has been bought a ‘lilypad’ tablet device by her parents. The story will pit the original toys against the tablet for Bonnie’s attention, in what Docter described as “toy meets tech”. Tim Allen, Tom Hanks, and Joan Cusack will all return to their voice roles in the film.

The announcement of ‘Gatto’ and the teaser for ‘Toy Story 5’ were part of Pixar’s slate presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The presentation also included footage and images from 30 years of ‘Toy Story’, which elicited gasps from the audience when Docter showed footage of the computer programme used to animate the first film, released in 1995.

Pixar’s upcoming release schedule also includes ‘The Incredibles 3’ and ‘Coco 2’, which are set for release in “2028 and beyond”. Brad Bird is writing ‘The Incredibles 3’, with Pete Sohn directing; while Lee Unkrich is returning to direct ‘Coco 2’. The studio’s next release is ‘Elio’, which lands in cinemas on June 20. Co-directors Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian were joined by producer Mary Alice Drumm to present the footage from the film.

According to Screen Daily, Pixar’s chief creative officer Pete Docter revealed that the studio is committed to pushing the boundaries of animation and storytelling. “We’re trying to capture the essence of Venice in ‘Gatto’,” Docter said. “We want to bring the city to life in a way that’s both authentic and imaginative.”

The announcement of ‘Gatto’ and ‘Toy Story 5’ has generated significant buzz in the animation industry, with many fans eagerly anticipating the release of these films. As reported by Screen Daily, Pixar’s commitment to innovation and quality has made it a leader in the animation industry.

In related news, Disney presented ‘Zootopia 2’ at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, showing new footage from the animal adventure and confirming that Ron Clements is directing the film. ‘Zootopia 2’ is releasing in cinemas on November 26.

Overall, Pixar’s upcoming slate of films promises to be exciting and innovative, with ‘Gatto’ and ‘Toy Story 5’ being two of the most highly anticipated releases. As the animation industry continues to evolve, Pixar remains at the forefront, pushing the boundaries of storytelling and animation.

Pixar’s focus on storytelling and innovation has made it a beloved brand, and fans are eagerly anticipating the release of these new films. With a commitment to quality and a passion for storytelling, Pixar is sure to continue to delight audiences around the world.
