Singapore Airlines Expands with 300 New Hires from Jetstar Asia

Singapore Airlines to Absorb Retrenched Jetstar Asia Employees

In a move to support the aviation industry in Singapore, Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group has announced that it will absorb retrenched Jetstar Asia employees following the airline’s closure. The Group will create 100 pilot and 200 cabin crew positions across SIA and its low-cost arm, Scoot.

Jetstar Asia, based at Singapore Changi Airport, announced on June 11 that it will cease operations on July 31, resulting in over 500 job losses. In response, the SIA Group promptly launched a support initiative to retain skilled aviation professionals within Singapore’s aviation ecosystem. According to a June 13 statement by an SIA spokesperson, the company aims to provide continued career pathways for affected personnel by integrating them into roles within the group’s airlines, particularly SIA and Scoot.

This effort includes a structured recruitment drive, with representatives from both airlines scheduled to visit Jetstar Asia’s office from June 17 to 19. During this time, retrenched employees will have the opportunity to learn about openings and engage directly with recruiters. The spokesperson emphasized SIA Group’s commitment to easing the onboarding experience, acknowledging the uncertainty faced by impacted staff. “The SIA Group is committed to supporting the affected employees and providing them with new opportunities,” the spokesperson said, as reported by Aviation A2Z.

The SIA Group’s support initiative was also highlighted by Labour chief Ng Chee Meng, who announced that the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) was collaborating with SIA Group to redeploy affected employees. The SIA Group confirmed that dedicated application channels have been established to streamline the hiring process for these workers. This coordinated effort highlights a strong industry commitment to retaining experienced aviation talent.

The decision to offer roles within the SIA Group helps maintain continuity in the Singapore aviation sector and preserves institutional knowledge amid industry restructuring. With Jetstar Asia’s exit from the market, these redeployment efforts reflect the SIA Group’s proactive workforce planning and social responsibility. By creating targeted job opportunities, the Group not only supports individuals during a difficult transition but also ensures its own operations benefit from a trained and ready pool of professionals.

According to Aviation A2Z, the spokesperson added that Jetstar Asia staff bring valuable operational expertise, and the group looks forward to integrating successful applicants into its teams. The Group’s proactive approach has been welcomed by the labour community, with the NTUC working closely with SIA to ensure a smooth transition for affected employees.

The SIA Group’s strategic workforce realignment demonstrates its commitment to supporting the aviation industry in Singapore. By providing new opportunities for retrenched Jetstar Asia employees, the Group is not only contributing to the well-being of its employees but also ensuring the continued growth and stability of the aviation sector in Singapore. As reported by Aviation A2Z, this move is a testament to the Group’s social responsibility and proactive workforce planning.
