Gers Close to Signing 20-Year-Old Winger, Birmingham Left Reeling

Rangers Set to Sign £20m-a-Year Winger, with Birmingham Expected to Miss Out – Sources

Glasgow Rangers are on the verge of signing highly sought-after winger Kwame Poku, with sources close to the deal confirming to this publication that the Scottish side are now confident of sealing his signature. The 23-year-old Ghana winger is leaving Peterborough United, where his contract expires on June 30, and has attracted interest from several Championship clubs, as well as offers from abroad.

According to sources, Rangers have emerged as the front-runners to sign Poku, beating off strong interest from the likes of Birmingham. The news will come as a blow to Peterborough United, who have a history of developing talented players and selling them on for a profit. Poku, who was signed from Colchester for just £250,000 in 2021, has been one of the standout performers in League One, netting 12 goals and adding eight assists in an injury-hit campaign.

As reported by TEAMtalk, Poku is seen as an ideal option to replace Vaclav Cerny, who has been priced out of a permanent move to Ibrox after his loan spell last season. The Scottish side are believed to have won the race for the in-demand winger, with Russell Martin’s side pushing hard to secure his signature.

In an interview with TEAMtalk, sources close to the deal revealed that Poku’s potential move to Rangers could be a significant blow to Peterborough United. "Peterborough bosses ideally want Poku to stay in England where the compensation tribunal for under 24 players is of a higher value than the FIFA regulated version for cross-border moves," a source confirmed.

The news will be a disappointment for Birmingham, who had been pushing hard to sign Poku. However, Rangers’ strong interest in the player and their determination to secure his signature have paid off. As TEAMtalk previously reported, Rangers’ interest in Poku was first revealed on June 9, and now the signing is edging closer.

Rangers manager Russell Martin could also raid his former club Southampton this summer, with a reunion with midfielder Flynn Downes on the cards. Additionally, Leicester City’s defender Connor Coady has held talks over a move to Govan, while Swansea’s Harry Darling, also wanted by a string of second-tier clubs including Norwich, is also on Martin’s radar. With Poku set to join Rangers, the Scottish side are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.

The potential signing of Poku will be seen as a coup for Rangers, who are looking to build on their strong finish to last season. As TEAMtalk reported, Poku’s impressive form in League One has attracted interest from several clubs, and his signing will be a significant addition to Rangers’ squad.

This publication understands that Rangers are expecting to complete the signing of Poku in the coming days, and the player is set to become one of the top earners at the club, with a reported wage of £20,000-a-week.
