Grantchester Season 10: Robson Green on the Show’s Longevity and His Character’s Evolution
As the popular Masterpiece series Grantchester returns for its tenth season on PBS, fans can expect more murders, mystery, and drama in the English village. For Robson Green, who has played Detective Inspector Geordie Keating since 2014, it’s a bittersweet moment. In an exclusive interview with TV Insider, Green discussed the show’s longevity, his character’s evolution, and what’s in store for Season 10.
According to Green, Grantchester has been a passion project for the cast and creative team from the start. "We all still care," he says, "and it’s the only series I’ve ever been involved in where that commitment — that fire, that need for it to do well — has held strong for such a long period of time." Green’s enthusiasm for the show is palpable, and it’s clear that his love for the project has only grown stronger over the years.
Green’s journey with Grantchester began in 2014, when he was cast in the eleventh hour to play one of the show’s two leads. At the time, he was in a "pretty sticky situation financially" after production was shut down on the thriller series Strike Back in Thailand. "I rang my agent and said, ‘Get me anything, I need the work,’" he recalls. The script for Grantchester, written by Daisy Coulam, caught his attention, and he knew he had to be a part of it. "It was so lovely and charming," he says, "and I saw myself as Geordie."
As the show has progressed, Green’s character has evolved significantly. In Season 10, Geordie and the English village’s newest vicar, Alphy Kottaram (Rishi Nair), have family to contend with when they’re not solving murders. The episodes, set in 1962, promise to be just as emotionally charged as previous seasons. "Past belief systems come to the surface, and that’s difficult for him to deal with," Green previews.
The new season also sees Geordie’s wife, Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth), making a bold professional move with help from vicarage housekeeper Mrs. Chapman (Tessa Peake-Jones). Meanwhile, Geordie’s colleagues, Larry (Bradley Hall) and Miss Scott (Melissa Johns), navigate their workplace romance. Former curate Leonard (Al Weaver) is also set to face challenges, including familial demons from his past. Green praises Al Weaver, saying, "I think Al is one of the finest actors I’ve ever worked with. He’s amazing."
As an executive producer on the show, Green has had a hand in shaping the direction of Grantchester. He credits the show’s longevity to the passion and commitment of the cast and creative team. With Season 10 premiering on PBS on June 15, fans can expect more of the same high-quality drama that has come to define the series. As Green says, "It’s lovely when you go back to the Grantchester family."
