Kristi Noem Hospitalized: DHS Secretary Rushed to Washington, D.C. Area Hospital
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem was taken by ambulance to a Washington, D.C., area hospital on Tuesday, according to a statement released by DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
In a statement sent to Newsweek, McLaughlin confirmed that Noem had an allergic reaction and was transported to the hospital out of an abundance of caution. "Secretary Noem had an allergic reaction today. She was transported to the hospital out of an abundance of caution. She is alert and recovering," McLaughlin said.
This development comes at a time when the Trump administration has been prioritising immigration control, with Noem at the helm of DHS. President Donald Trump campaigned in 2024 on the promise of mass deportations. The issue has sparked controversy, with protests breaking out in Los Angeles last week in reaction to numerous U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids. Trump sent National Guard troops and U.S. Marines to the city amid the unrest, in defiance of California Governor Gavin Newsom’s wishes. The move was ultimately reversed by a judge, restoring Newsom’s power.
Noem was also involved in an incident during a news conference in Los Angeles last week amid the protests, where Democratic Senator Alex Padilla was forcibly removed by the Secret Service. The incident sparked widespread media attention, with many questioning the aggressive tactics employed by the Secret Service.
According to Newsweek, numerous Secret Service agents are posted at entrances of the hospital where Noem was admitted. However, it is currently unclear what caused Noem’s purported allergic reaction. CNN reports that Noem was conscious and had spoken with her security detail after being rushed to the hospital.
The news of Noem’s hospitalization sparked an outpouring of support from her allies, including Trump ally Bruce Levell, who took to social media to express his well-wishes. "My dear friend @Sec_Noem, our fearless Secretary of Homeland Security, was just rushed to the hospital. My heart is with her during this challenging time, but I know her strength and determination will shine through. Please join me in keeping Kristi in your prayers for a swift and full recovery," Levell posted.
Nick Sortor, who co-hosts The Roundtable Show podcast, also took to social media to confirm that Noem had been rushed to the hospital in Washington, D.C. "🚨 #BREAKING: DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has been rushed to the hospital in DC I can confirm she went by ambulance about 45 minutes ago, and that ambulance was escorted by multiple Secret Service vehicles The nature of the emergency is unknown, but she is conscious and has spoken with her security detail. Pray for Kristi Noem. We need her," Sortor posted.
In a separate incident, Noem had a tense exchange with Senator Padilla during a news conference in Los Angeles earlier this month. However, Noem later tweeted that she had met with Padilla for 15 minutes and that they had agreed to exchange phone numbers and continue talking. "After he interrupted our press conference with law enforcement, I met with Senator Padilla for 15 minutes. We probably disagree on 90% of the topics but we agreed to exchange phone numbers and we will continue to talk—that is the way it should be in this country. I wish he would’ve acted that way in the beginning rather than creating a scene," Noem tweeted.
As Newsweek reports, it is currently unclear when Noem will be released from the hospital. The DHS secretary’s health is being closely monitored, and her team is providing updates on her condition.
The hospitalization of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has sparked widespread concern, with many of her supporters and allies offering their well-wishes. As the situation continues to unfold, Newsweek will provide updates on Noem’s condition and any further developments.
In related news, President Trump’s immigration policies have been a topic of controversy, with many questioning the impact of his proposals on the country. As the debate continues, the hospitalization of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has raised questions about the potential implications for the Trump administration’s immigration agenda.
