Margaret Qualley to Star as Gay PI Opposite Aubrey Plaza

Margaret Qualley Set to Star in New Lesbian Role as Gay Private Investigator

Margaret Qualley, known for her roles in films such as Drive-Away Dolls and the Oscar-winning film The Substance, has lined up her next lesbian role in the upcoming film Honey Don’t!, reports Yahoo Entertainment.

According to Yahoo Entertainment, Qualley will be working with husband-and-wife duo Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke, who is queer, on the new film. Honey Don’t! stars Qualley as the titular Honey, a gay private investigator who is “investigating a questionable church led by Chris Evans,” per i-D.

The film will also star Emmy Award-nominated actress Aubrey Plaza as a mysterious woman, as well as Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Billy Eichner (Bros), Gabby Beans (The Skin of Our Teeth), and Talia Ryder (Never Rarely Sometimes Always). Qualley spoke with i-D about the role, saying it required her “to be a little more suave than I am, more mysterious. I tend to want to diffuse things before they even happen. [Whereas] Honey, she’s like honey — she’s skillful, she’s smooth, she is slipping in and out undetected.”

This new role is not Qualley’s first foray into lesbian characters, as she starred in Drive-Away Dolls earlier this year. Drive-Away Dolls and Honey Don’t! are the first two films in a planned Lesbian B-Movie trilogy that Coen and Cooke have. Qualley praised working with the couple, saying it is “unlike anything else I’ve ever known.”

Qualley also expressed her enthusiasm for the trilogy, saying that if she is not involved in the third film, “let the record show that if I’m not in [the third film], I will be offended and I will be upset,” (via i-D). Honey Don’t! is set to be released in theaters sometime in 2025.

As noted by Yahoo Entertainment, Qualley’s role in Drive-Away Dolls received mixed reviews, but was praised by Out as being “fun, weird, and exactly the kind of queer movie we need more of.” With Honey Don’t!, it seems that Qualley is continuing to make a name for herself as a talented and versatile actress, particularly in the realm of LGBTQ+ cinema.

The upcoming film is a testament to the growing demand for queer stories and characters in mainstream cinema. As the entertainment industry continues to evolve and become more inclusive, it’s exciting to see talented actresses like Margaret Qualley taking on roles that showcase her range and depth as an actress. With Honey Don’t! set to release in 2025, fans of Qualley and LGBTQ+ cinema have a lot to look forward to.
