Toy Story 5: Everything You Need to Know
The beloved Pixar franchise is set to continue with a brand new story, as Toy Story 5 hits theaters in June 2026. According to reports from People, the fifth installment of the franchise will focus on Jessie, voiced by Joan Cusack, with Tim Allen and Tom Hanks reprising their roles as Buzz Lightyear and Woody, respectively.
The news of Toy Story 5 was announced at Disney’s D23 expo in August 2024, where Pixar shared the first details about what’s next for Buzz, Woody, and their toy friends. The film will be directed by Andrew Stanton, a key figure in the creation of the Toy Story universe, who has been a part of the franchise since its inception as a writer on all the former Toy Story films. Stanton will co-direct with McKenna Harris, who produced Elemental and directed the Disney+ animated short Ciao Alberto, based on Luca.
As reported by People, the central conflict of Toy Story 5 will involve the toys grappling with staying relevant in the age of technology. The concept art revealed at D23 shows the toys looking sadly at their owner engrossed in a tablet, hinting at the emotional and humorous struggles they will face as they try to reclaim the child’s attention. "In Toy Story 5 the toys’ jobs get exponentially harder when our toy crew goes head to head with what kids are obsessed with today: electronics," Stanton said at the event.
The plot of Toy Story 5 will also explore the journey of Jessie, with Allen confirming that the movie will have an emphasis on her character. "I can tell you that it’s a lot about Jessie," he said in an interview with WIVB. "Tom [Hanks] and I do — Woody and I — do realign. And there’s an unbelievable opening scene with Buzz Lightyear. I can give you that, but I can’t give you much more."
The Toy Story franchise has been a beloved part of many people’s childhoods, with the first film released in 1995. Since then, the franchise has grown to include four films, with the most recent installment, Toy Story 4, concluding with Woody and Buzz parting ways. The film ended with Woody joining Bo Peep to live a life as a "lost toy," free from the constraints of being owned by a child.
