Heat Defy Odds, Become 1st 10th Seed to Advance in NBA Play-in

NBA Play-in Tournament Concludes: Miami Heat and Memphis Grizzlies Secure Final Playoff Spots

The NBA playoff picture has come into full focus following the conclusion of the play-in tournament on Friday night. The Miami Heat and Memphis Grizzlies secured the final two spots in the playoffs, with the Heat defeating the Atlanta Hawks 123-114 in overtime and the Grizzlies pummeling the Dallas Mavericks 120-106.

According to a report by CNN, the Miami Heat, who were the last team to enter the Eastern Conference play-in bracket with the 10th-best record in the regular season, became the No. 8 seed in the East with their win over the Hawks. The Heat caught the Hawks off guard, leading by as much as 17 points in the first half. However, the Hawks rallied in the fourth quarter, sparked by clutch shooting from guard Trae Young, to tie the game and force overtime.

In overtime, Heat reserve guard Davion Mitchell took over, scoring nine of his 16 points to outscore the Hawks single-handedly. The Heat’s Tyler Herro led all scorers with a game-high 30 points, while Young had a team-high 29 points for Atlanta. With the win, the Heat became the first 10th place team to ever advance out of the play-in tournament and will now face the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers in a first-round series beginning Sunday.

As reported by CNN, in the Western Conference, the Memphis Grizzlies secured the eighth seed with their decisive win over the Dallas Mavericks. The Grizzlies pounced on the Mavericks early, establishing a 39-24 lead after the first quarter and never looking back. Despite star guard Ja Morant playing on an injured right ankle, the Grizzlies were lifted by an all-around team effort, with all of their starters scoring in double figures. Jaren Jackson Jr. led the Grizzlies with 24 points, while Morant scored 22.

The Mavericks, on the other hand, were led by Anthony Davis, who scored a game-high 40 points. However, the team’s next highest scorer was Klay Thompson with 18 points, and two of the Mavericks’ starters – PJ Washington and Dereck Lively II – failed to score. The win for the Grizzlies sets up a showdown with the No. 1 seed Oklahoma City Thunder, who own the NBA’s best record during the regular season.

The NBA playoffs are set to begin on Saturday, with the NBA Finals scheduled to tip off on June 5. The Heat’s win over the Hawks and the Grizzlies’ win over the Mavericks marked the conclusion of the play-in tournament, which saw several teams fight for a spot in the playoffs.

The Miami Heat’s journey to the playoffs was nothing short of remarkable, as they became the first 10th place team to ever advance out of the play-in tournament. As CNN reported, their win over the Hawks capped off an impressive performance in the play-in tournament, which saw them defeat the Chicago Bulls in their first game on Wednesday.

The Memphis Grizzlies’ win over the Mavericks marked a strong team effort, with all of their starters scoring in double figures. According to CNN, the Grizzlies’ win sets up an exciting matchup with the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder, who will look to use their home-court advantage to take down the Grizzlies.
