Ocean Park Tackles Marine Plastic on Earth Day

Ocean Park Celebrates Earth Day 2025 with Marine Plastic Challenge Anniversary

In a significant step towards environmental conservation, Ocean Park Corporation is marking Earth Day 2025, which falls on April 22nd, with the first anniversary of the Jockey Club Marine Plastic Challenge Education Programme. According to a report by Dim Sum Daily, the programme, supported by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, has made substantial progress in removing marine debris from Victoria Harbour and Aberdeen Harbour.

The programme, spearheaded by Ocean Park Corporation, utilises four solar-powered vessels developed by the Clean Waterways Initiative in 2019. These vessels have successfully collected over 50,000 plastic bottles, 27,000 aluminium cans, and nearly 30 tonnes of landfill waste from the busy waterways. Additionally, their solar-powered operations have led to a reduction of more than 43,000 kg of carbon dioxide emissions. As Dim Sum Daily reports, this effort is part of Ocean Park’s broader conservation initiative, Mission R.

Isabel Li, Head of Education at Ocean Park Corporation, was quoted by Dim Sum Daily as saying, “The Jockey Club Marine Plastic Challenge Education Programme reflects Earth Day 2025’s call to action, encouraging everyone to adopt renewable energy and foster a sustainable future. As a key component of Ocean Park’s conservation initiative, Mission R, this programme exemplifies our dedication to environmental stewardship and coexistence with nature. We aim not only to clean our harbours but also to inspire a new generation to advocate for ecosystem diversity and sustainable practices.”

The programme has not only focused on clean-up efforts but has also actively engaged the community through educational initiatives. According to Dim Sum Daily, the programme has reached over 7,000 students and members of the public via school outreach, interschool competitions, and community events, raising awareness about plastic pollution and promoting plastic-free living.

Ocean Park’s Mission R campaign focuses on three core pillars: ‘Plastic Challenge’, ‘Saving Species and Habitats’, and ‘Eat Local’, all aimed at promoting behavioural changes to protect the environment and preserve biodiversity. As reported by Dim Sum Daily, this initiative demonstrates Ocean Park’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability.

The Jockey Club Marine Plastic Challenge Education Programme serves as a shining example of collaborative efforts between organisations and the community to address pressing environmental issues. As Dim Sum Daily highlights, the programme’s success underscores the importance of collective action in protecting the environment and promoting sustainable practices for a better future.
