Willie Mullins’ Sunday Runners: Plumpton, Fairyhouse, and Cork Thoughts
Leading trainer Willie Mullins is set to run horses at three meetings on Sunday, including a strong team heading to Plumpton for the Sussex Champion Hurdle. The Sporting Life takes a closer look at his runners.
At Plumpton, Mullins has entered a quartet of contenders for the Sussex Champion Hurdle, including Absurde, Daddy Long Legs, Sir Gerhard, and Tounsivator. According to Sporting Life, this year’s Sussex Champion Hurdle has caught Mullins’ attention, and he’s sending a very good team to contest it.
“It’s a tight, faster circuit and I believe they’ve watered well for this meeting,” Sporting Life quotes Mullins as saying. “Speed is of the essence and therefore we have the likes of Absurde and Sir Gerhard in there.”
Mullins’ team includes Absurde, who is considered one of the top contenders, having handled the speed at Chester well last year. Sporting Life reports that Mullins is hopeful that Absurde will give jockey Harry Cobden a good ride.
In addition to Absurde, Sporting Life notes that Daddy Long Legs and Sir Gerhard also have a chance, with Nico De Boinville riding Daddy Long Legs and cheekpieces being added to Sir Gerhard for the first time.
At Fairyhouse, Mullins has a strong team entered in the Honeysuckle Mares Novice Chase, including Aurora Vega, Maughreen, Karoline Banbou, and Karamoja. Sporting Life reports that Paul Townend has elected to ride Aurora Vega, who won the Solerina at Fairyhouse in January.
Mullins also has Champ Kiely, Ile Atlantique, and Spindleberry entered in a Grade One over two-and-a-half miles at Fairyhouse. Sporting Life notes that Champ Kiely has been given the nod by Townend, who believes the horse could still be improving.
At Cork, Mullins has two contenders for the Michael O’Sullivan Chase, Asterion Forlonge and Mister Policeman. Sporting Life reports that Mullins is hopeful that one of his horses will win the race, with Asterion Forlonge being the top contender on paper.
Mullins also has Mirazur West and Doctor Du Mesnil entered at Cork, with Jody McGarvey and Jody Townend riding, respectively. Sporting Life notes that Mullins is confident that his horses will give a good account of themselves.
