EFL Permutations: Leeds United on Brink of Promotion as Easter Monday Fixtures Take Centre Stage
The English Football League (EFL) is set for a thrilling Easter Monday, with promotions, play-off spots, relegations, and survival all on the line across the Championship, League One, and League Two. According to talkSPORT, the business end of the season is ramping up, with a full bill of fixtures across the three divisions.
In the Championship, Leeds United, led by manager Daniel Farke, are on the brink of promotion to the Premier League. The Whites host Stoke City on Monday afternoon, live and exclusive on talkSPORT 2. A victory for Leeds would put the club on the brink of promotion, but eyes at Elland Road will then instantly turn to Turf Moor, where Burnley, currently in second on goal difference, play third-placed Sheffield United in the evening kick-off, exclusively live on talkSPORT.
As talkSPORT reports, Leeds will be promoted if Sheffield United fail to win, while a victory for Burnley would also guarantee Scott Parker’s men a top-two finish. Elsewhere, Bristol City can secure a play-off spot if they beat Luton and Middlesbrough lose to Sheffield Wednesday.
The relegation battle in the Championship is set to go down to the wire, with no relegation places to be confirmed on Easter Monday. The top-two in the division could seal their return to the Premier League, with both Leeds and Burnley in action.
In League One, Crawley and Cambridge are both at risk of joining already-relegated Shrewsbury Town. talkSPORT states that Crawley host Exeter, needing to at least match the results of Bristol Rovers and Burton, who face Stevenage and Birmingham, respectively. Cambridge are only a point better off in 22nd and face Leyton Orient, who will not necessarily seal the U’s fate if they lose.
The second automatic promotion spot and the one play-off place still available in League One will not be decided until Saturday at the earliest. Birmingham City have already been crowned champions.
In League Two, Morecambe’s EFL status is hanging by a thread following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Bromley on Good Friday. talkSPORT notes that the Shrimps are eight points adrift at the foot of League Two with three games remaining. Only a victory over Salford City will give the club a hope of preserving their EFL status, but they may still be relegated should 22nd-placed Tranmere also win.
Promotion will not be decided yet in League Two, with three points covering the top four. Leaders Port Vale are assured of a play-off place, and could be joined by any or all of Doncaster, Bradford, Walsall, and Wimbledon.
