West Brom Sacks Mowbray as Head Coach

West Bromwich Albion Sacks Tony Mowbray and Mark Jenkins

West Bromwich Albion has parted ways with manager Tony Mowbray and his assistant Mark Jenkins following a series of poor results, the club announced in a statement on their official website. According to the statement, "The club would like to place on record its thanks to Tony and Mark for their efforts – but has made the decision to part company following a series of poor results." The statement also expressed gratitude for their contributions to the club, saying "Tony and Mark will forever be welcome at The Hawthorns and their contributions to the club winning the 2007-08 Championship title will never be forgotten."

The news comes as a surprise to many fans, especially given Mowbray’s history with the club. He led West Bromwich Albion to the Premier League 17 years ago and was instrumental in their success during his first spell as manager. As reported by the BBC, Mowbray had returned to management for the first time since a health scare in February 2024, which led to him stepping away from his role in charge of Birmingham City to undergo treatment for bowel cancer.

During his previous stint at Albion, Mowbray steered the team to the Championship play-off final in his first season, although they were ultimately beaten by Derby County at Wembley. However, the team bounced back the following year, winning the Championship title and reaching the FA Cup semi-final, where they lost to eventual winners Portsmouth. The team was subsequently relegated after one season in the top flight, after which Mowbray left in 2009 for Celtic Park.

Mowbray went on to have five more managerial stints, with his hometown club Middlesbrough, Coventry City, Blackburn, Sunderland, and Birmingham, before returning to The Hawthorns. Unfortunately, he was unable to recreate the success he had during his first spell as Albion boss, and the team has struggled to find form this season.

The decision to part ways with Mowbray and Jenkins was taken by the club’s management, who are keen to turn the team’s fortunes around. As quoted in the BBC article, the club’s statement expressed appreciation for the duo’s efforts but ultimately decided it was time for a change.

The news is likely to spark a lot of interest among football fans, particularly those following West Bromwich Albion. According to the BBC, Mowbray’s health scare earlier this year was a significant setback, and it remains to be seen how the team will perform under new management. One thing is certain, however: Tony Mowbray and Mark Jenkins will always be remembered for their contributions to West Bromwich Albion’s success in the past.

As the team looks to the future, fans will be eagerly anticipating the appointment of a new manager and assistant. The BBC will continue to provide updates on this developing story as more information becomes available. In the meantime, it’s clear that West Bromwich Albion has a lot to consider as they look to get back on track.
