Atalay: Future Defined by 105 Years of Unwavering Struggle

Turkey’s Future to be Shaped by Citizens’ Determination, Says Can Atalay

In a statement marking the 105th anniversary of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM), Can Atalay, a Turkey Workers’ Party (TİP) member whose parliamentary status was revoked despite a Constitutional Court of Turkey (AYM) ruling, has said that the country’s future will be determined by the resolute struggle of its citizens.

Atalay, who has been held in Marmara Prison in Silivri for years, released a statement on the occasion of TBMM’s founding anniversary and 23 April National Sovereignty and Children’s Day. "Today, April 23, can only be celebrated with joy in a democratic and social republic," he said.

In his statement, Atalay recalled the events of 19 March, when citizens took to the streets to assert their democratic rights and freedoms, and to reject the unjust and unlawful developments in the country. "On that day, our citizens demonstrated their determination to stand up for their democratic rights and freedoms, to refuse to succumb to unjust and unlawful practices, and to bring an end to the economic system that condemns the majority of our people to poverty and destitution," he said.

Atalay emphasised that the millions of citizens who took to the streets, despite their different concerns and political views, shared a common demand for a more democratic and equitable country. He vowed that, together, they would:

  • Restore the parliament to its former glory as a reputable institution
  • Build on the foundations laid by the Republic and complete its unfinished business, transforming it into a democratic and social republic for all citizens
  • Protect the gains made, including constitutional rights and freedoms, secularism, and a structured and institutionalised state and political system, and eliminate threats to these achievements

Atalay’s statement concluded by echoing the words of the founders of the Turkish Republic: "Just as 105 years ago, the nation’s destiny was determined by the nation’s will and determination, today, the future of our country will be shaped by the resolute struggle of citizens of all ages."

According to Evrensel, Atalay’s message was one of hope and determination, calling on citizens to continue their struggle for a more democratic and equitable Turkey.

The Turkish Grand National Assembly was founded on 23 April 1920, marking the beginning of the modern Turkish state. Since then, the day has been celebrated as a national holiday, symbolising the country’s commitment to democracy and national sovereignty.

Atalay’s statement has been met with widespread attention and support, with many calling for an end to the country’s authoritarian tendencies and a return to democratic values. As Evrensel reports, Atalay’s words have resonated with citizens across the country, who are increasingly demanding a more democratic and participatory politics.

The implications of Atalay’s statement are significant, highlighting the ongoing tensions between the Turkish government and its citizens over issues of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. As the country continues to navigate these challenges, Atalay’s message serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of citizen engagement and activism in shaping Turkey’s future.
