Snooker Legend Stephen Hendry Challenges Judd Trump to Prove His Greatness
World Snooker Championship 2025: Hendry Believes Trump Needs More Titles to Justify Status as an All-Time Great
According to a report by TNT Sports, Stephen Hendry has challenged Judd Trump to win more World Championship titles to cement his status as an all-time great in the sport. The world No. 1 has won the World Championship once, but Hendry believes that this solitary victory may not be enough to justify his status among the greatest players of all time.
In an interview ahead of his opening match at this year’s tournament against Zhou Yuelong, Hendry stated that Trump needs to win more Crucible crowns to prove his greatness. “But in my opinion, to be remembered as a true, true great, I think he needs to have at least another couple of world titles under his belt,” Hendry said, as quoted by TNT Sports. “To prove why he is so good. I always wanted to prove myself at the biggest tournaments, the World Championship and Masters and he’s done it.”
Hendry, who is one of only nine players to have won multiple World Championships at the Crucible since 1977, believes that Trump’s attitude towards winning titles is different from his own and other greats like Steve Davis and Ronnie O’Sullivan. “I don’t think Judd pays a lot of attention to it,” Hendry said. “I think Judd wants to win them, but it is not the be-all and end-all. Steve and I and Ronnie were about winning major titles, but Judd’s attitude is slightly different.”
Trump has had a successful season so far, winning the Shanghai Masters, Saudi Arabia Masters, and UK Championship. However, Hendry does not think that these victories are enough to secure his status as an all-time great. “There’s no doubt there would be an asterisk next to his name if he wins 100 titles, but there’s only one World Championship,” Hendry said.
The challenge issued by Hendry comes as Trump prepares to defend his title at the World Snooker Championship 2025. Trump has been open about his desire to peak at the right time of the season and has opted out of several tournaments to conserve his energy. In an interview at the UK Championship, Trump stated that he prefers to be at the peak of his form towards the end of the season. “I don’t think I’m going to play a lot of snooker in the next few months,” Trump said. “I would rather be at the peak of my form towards the end of the season.”
As the World Snooker Championship 2025 gets underway, all eyes will be on Trump to see if he can rise to the challenge issued by Hendry and prove his status as an all-time great in the sport. Will Trump be able to win more World Championship titles and cement his place among the greatest players of all time? Only time will tell.
