Netflix’s ‘You’ Fails to Kill: A Mercy Killing Falls Flat

Netflix Series "You" Continues to Disappoint in Season 5

The latest instalment of the popular Netflix series "You" has left viewers underwhelmed, with many taking to social media to express their disappointment with the show’s direction. According to a review by The Evening Standard, the fifth season of "You" is marred by cringeworthy writing, poor dialogue, and a convoluted plot.

The review, published by The Evening Standard, notes that the majority of the season is consumed by Joe’s (played by Penn Badgley) attempts to rid himself of his pesky sister-in-laws, Reagan and Maddie, played by Anna Camp. The storyline, which dominates the season, has been described as "long and arduous" with "Freaky Friday rug pulls" that add to the show’s frustration.

As The Evening Standard points out, the plot seems to meander on interminably, with Joe’s budding romance with Bronte providing little respite from the tedium. It is not until the storyline takes a dramatic twist that the show begins to show some semblance of life. However, by that stage, many viewers may have already lost interest.

The review by The Evening Standard also criticises the performances in the show, describing them as "middling". The publication notes that while Badgley does his best to carry the show, the writing is often so poor that it is a wonder he can make it work. In contrast, Charlotte Ritchie shines in her role, with The Evening Standard suggesting that she is "honestly just too good to be there".

The latest season of "You" is not the first to receive criticism from viewers and critics alike. The show has long been accused of prioritising style over substance, with some critics arguing that its focus on aesthetics and shock value has come at the expense of coherent storytelling. As The Evening Standard notes, "You" has always been a show that walks a fine line between clever and cringeworthy. Unfortunately, in season 5, it seems to have crossed over into the latter".

In conclusion, the latest season of "You" has failed to impress, with The Evening Standard describing it as a "long and arduous" watch. While Penn Badgley and Charlotte Ritchie deliver strong performances, the show’s poor writing and convoluted plot make it a disappointing addition to the series. As the show continues to attract a large and dedicated following, it remains to be seen whether the creators can take heed of criticisms and produce a more compelling narrative in future seasons.
