Glasgow Legends Shine in Belgian Gem: Simple Minds Live Review

Simple Minds Live In The City Of Diamonds Reviewed

Simple Minds have released a live album, Live In The City Of Diamonds, which was recorded in Amsterdam last April. The album, released on BMG, is part of a series of live recordings following the 1987’s Live In The City Of Light (Paris) and 2019’s Live In The City Of Angels (LA). According to a review by MOJO, the album finds Simple Minds performing in the city of diamonds, although not the actual city of diamonds, Antwerp.

The review states that the album is “short on surprises” with Jim Kerr namechecking Joseph Conrad on the oldest song, 1980’s This Fear Of Gods. There are no songs from this century included in the album. However, for all the potential water-treading, cloudbusting singer Sarah Brown leavens the testosterone. The review praises the band’s performance, stating that it’s “a stirring romp through most of the hits”.

The songs still stand up, not least the much-maligned Belfast Child, which is all the better for being expanded over 10 luxuriously languid minutes. According to MOJO, “The songs still stand up, not least the much-maligned Belfast Child, which is all the better for being expanded over 10 luxuriously languid minutes.”

As noted by MOJO, the album features a list of tracks including Waterfront, Love Song, Sons And Fascination, Sweat In Bullet, This Fear Of Gods, Let There Be Love, She’s A River, Once Upon A Time, Glittering Prize, New Gold Dream, Promised You A Miracle, Belfast Child, Someone Somewhere (In Summertime), See The Lights, Book Of Brilliant Things, Don’t You (Forget About Me), Alive And Kicking, Sanctify Yourself, Vision Thing, The American, Solstice Kiss, Premonition, Hunter And The Hunted, and Colours Fly And Catherine Wheel.

The album Simple Minds Live In The City Of Diamonds is set to be released on April 25 on BMG and is available for pre-order on Amazon, Rough Trade, and HMV. Fans can also get the definitive verdict on all the month’s essential new albums, reissues, music books, and films in the latest issue of MOJO, on sale now.

The review concludes that despite being short on surprises, Live In The City Of Diamonds is a great live album that showcases Simple Minds’ ability to perform their hits with energy and passion. As MOJO states, “it’s a stirring romp through most of the hits”.
