York’s Atang Turns Pro with Matchroom

Yorkshire’s Leo Atang Goes Professional with Matchroom Boxing

In a significant development in the world of boxing, 18-year-old heavyweight sensation Leo Atang has signed a long-term deal with Matchroom Boxing, a renowned promotional company in the sport. According to a report by York Press, Atang, who is trained by Ashley Martin out of Legions Amateur Boxing Club, will make his professional debut later this year under the guidance of promoter Eddie Hearn.

Atang, a former rugby league winger, has emerged as one of the country’s hottest prospects in boxing, with his natural power, athleticism, and physical presence seeing him rise through the amateur ranks. As reported by York Press, he is a five-time national champion and stopped Korean Lee Geon Hui in the first round to claim gold at the World Boxing Under-19 World Championships in the USA last year.

The young boxer, who will be managed by former World Champion Sunny Edwards, expressed his excitement about signing with Matchroom Boxing. “It’s a dream come true to sign with Matchroom,” he said, as quoted by York Press. “My team and I have had many good conversations leading to me turning pro. But I knew this one just felt right from the start. It’s what I always hoped for.”

Atang’s dedication to his craft is evident in his words. “We put the work in and we put the hours in. I live the life. My mentality is – push myself the absolute limit and leave no stone unturned,” he said, as reported by York Press. “I’m fit, I’m strong and I’ll be ready to go with anyone tomorrow. I’ve got what it takes to go to the top of this sport. The future is here.”

Matchroom Boxing’s official Twitter account welcomed Atang to the professional game, tweeting: “The Future Is Here. Welcoming Team GB amateur sensation @LeoAtang to the professional game. Inspired by @anthonyjoshua, the 18-year-old is ready to dominate the Heavyweight division for years to come.” As reported by York Press, Eddie Hearn, the promoter, believes that Atang has the potential to follow in the footsteps of Anthony Joshua and become a major force in British boxing.

“He is the guy, in my opinion, to follow in the footsteps of Anthony Joshua and ignite the heavyweight division to all kinds of fanbase’s across the county,” Hearn said, as quoted by York Press. “Young man, there’s plenty of work to do, and we’re going to box him all over the country, all over the world. Seven, eight fights a year. Remember what I say, everybody in this arena, everyone watching, follow this young man and remember the name. This is the future of British boxing and the future of the heavyweight division.”

As Atang prepares to embark on his professional career, the boxing world will be watching with great interest. With his impressive amateur record and the guidance of Matchroom Boxing, he has the potential to become a major force in the sport. As reported by York Press, Atang’s signing with Matchroom Boxing is a significant coup for the promotional company, and fans can expect to see great things from him in the years to come.
