ITV’s New Drama Set to Hook Line of Duty Fans with Thrilling Premise

Malpractice Returns: ITV’s Thrilling Drama Set to Gripping Second Season

ITV’s widely acclaimed medical thriller, Malpractice, is set to return for a second season, bringing with it a fresh cast and a new scandal. The show, created and written by former NHS Doctor Grace Ofori-Attah, first aired in 2023 and gripped the nation with its tale of Dr Lucinda Edwards, a doctor who finds herself at the centre of a medical investigation.

According to Metro.co.uk, the first season scored an impressive 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, with fans praising it as ‘watchable’ and ‘enjoyable’. One critic praised it as ‘excellently well paced’ and another who applauds the show for having ‘something new to say’. The show followed Dr Lucinda Edwards, played by Niamh Algar, as her professional and personal life careens towards disaster.

In season two, Helen Behan and Jordan Kouamé return as the Medical Investigation Unit (MIU), this time investigating Dr James Ford, played by Victoria star Tom Hughes. The synopsis reads: ‘When on-call Psychiatric Registrar Dr James Ford is caught between an anxious new mother’s postnatal check-up and the sectioning of a psychotic patient, no one could predict the devastating outcome.’ Despite a ‘messy’ personal life and ‘arrogant’ personality, Dr Ford seems committed to his vulnerable patients and as the investigation deepens, a hospital ‘seemingly at war with itself’ is uncovered among the debris.

As Metro.co.uk reports, the new season also features stars from across several beloved procedural thrillers, including Blue Light’s Hannah McClean, Top Boys’ Seraphina Beh, Happy Valley’s Rick Warden, and Line of Duty’s Ace Bhatti. Tom Hughes, who plays Dr James Ford, said: ‘I couldn’t be more delighted to be playing James and helping bring to life Grace’s pertinent and important piece [of writing], which stopped me in my tracks when I read it.’

The first season became the most-watched launch episode on ITV that year with 6.7m viewers based on 28-day viewing and received wide-ranging critical acclaim. The Guardian’s four-star review called it ‘intricately plotted and beautifully, leanly written’, and Radio Times dubbed it ‘gripping, tense and deeply engaging’.

According to Metro.co.uk, Malpractice returns on Sunday, May 4 on ITV1 and ITVX, with season one available to stream now on ITVX. The show’s gripping storyline and talented cast are sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seats, eager to see what happens next.

As the show’s second season approaches, fans are eagerly anticipating the next instalment of the medical thriller. With its intricate plot, talented cast, and critical acclaim, Malpractice is set to continue its success and captivate audiences once again.

The programme’s creator, Grace Ofori-Attah, has stated that she hopes the audience will be equally as gripped and engaged by the new season as she was. Fans of the show will be eagerly awaiting the new episodes to see if Dr James Ford can save his career from a string of apparently damning mistakes and if the MIU can uncover the truth of what happened, despite hostility from all sides.

Malpractice’s second season promises to be just as thrilling as the first, with a new cast and a fresh scandal to uncover. With its talented cast, intricate plot, and critical acclaim, the show is set to continue its success and captivate audiences once again.
