Alex Marquez Seizes MotoGP Lead After Brother’s Crash

Alex Marquez Secures Maiden MotoGP Win in Spanish Grand Prix

In a thrilling Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez, Alex Marquez claimed his first MotoGP grand prix win, taking the top step of the podium and catapulting himself to the top of the championship standings. The win marked a significant milestone for the Gresini Ducati rider, who had previously secured a top step finish in the sprint at Sepang in 2023 but had yet to achieve the same level of success in a full-distance MotoGP race.

According to The Race, Alex Marquez’s victory came after a run of eight second-place finishes in nine sprint-and-GP starts in 2025, demonstrating his consistent pace and ability to challenge for wins. The 25-year-old rider got off to a strong start, overtaking his brother Marc and pole sitter Fabio Quartararo to take the lead.

However, it was not without incident, as Alex Marquez nearly caused a major crash by getting his braking wrong into Turn 6, having to navigate his way between the two factory Ducatis up ahead. Meanwhile, his brother Marc was involved in a dramatic duel with Pecco Bagnaia, which ultimately ended in disaster as Marc crashed out of contention on the third lap.

As reported by The Race, Quartararo was able to establish a comfortable lead, but Alex Marquez was able to reel him in and eventually overtake him on lap 11 of 25. "It then took Alex Marquez until lap 11 of 25 to line up and execute a move on Quartararo, which ended up a fairly textbook Turn 1 overtake – with Quartararo having no answer as soon as Marquez found clean air," The Race noted.

The younger Marquez brother was able to pull away from Quartararo, securing a convincing win and his first MotoGP victory. Quartararo finished second, securing Yamaha’s first MotoGP podium of any kind since Indonesia in 2023. Bagnaia completed the podium, finishing third and now sits 20 points back from Alex Marquez and 19 points back from Marc Marquez.

The Spanish Grand Prix was marked by several crashes, including incidents involving Marc Marquez, Fermin Aldeguer, Franco Morbidelli, Joan Mir, Jack Miller, and Somkiat Chantra. Despite his early crash, Marc Marquez was able to recover from 22nd to 12th, running the best pace of anyone in the second half of the race.

In the battle for the top 10, Tech3’s Maverick Vinales was a standout performer, eventually finishing fourth. Ai Ogura (Trackhouse Aprilia), Enea Bastianini (Tech3 KTM), and Luca Marini (Honda) completed the top 10.

The results from the Spanish Grand Prix are as follows:

  1. Alex Marquez (Gresini Ducati)
  2. Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha)
  3. Pecco Bagnaia (Ducati)
  4. Maverick Vinales (Tech3 KTM)
  5. Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46 Ducati)
  6. Brad Binder (KTM)
  7. Pedro Acosta (KTM)
  8. Ai Ogura (Trackhouse Aprilia)
  9. Enea Bastianini (Tech3 KTM)
  10. Luca Marini (Honda)

As reported by The Race, Alex Marquez now leads the championship standings by a single point, with Marc Marquez just one point behind. The next round of the MotoGP season is expected to take place in the coming weeks, with fans eagerly anticipating the next instalment of the championship battle.
