Brits Make Mark: Draper, Fearnley, Norrie Advance

British Trio Progress to Third Round at Mutua Madrid Open

The Mutua Madrid Open has seen a stellar performance from British tennis stars, with Jacob Fearnley, Jack Draper, and Cam Norrie all securing wins to progress to the third round. The impressive showing comes as a significant boost to British tennis, with the trio demonstrating their skill and determination on the clay courts of Madrid.

According to the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), Fearnley’s comeback win against 19th seed Tomas Mahac was the highlight of the day, with the British No.2 claiming the biggest career win by ranking over world No.20 Mahac 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 45 minutes. This remarkable victory marks a significant milestone in Fearnley’s career, and he will now face 15th seed Grigor Dimitrov in the next round.

The LTA reports that Fearnley, who came through qualifying to reach the main draw, got off to a slow start on serve against Mahac, but the turning point came early in the second set as he fought off break points in both of his opening two service games to get himself back on track. The 23-year-old’s composure on the biggest stage against the toughest opponents has been one of the shining parts of his game during his rise in the last 12 months, and he showed it once again in Madrid.

As quoted by the LTA, Fearnley said, "I actually rolled my ankle and was in a decent amount of pain and just kind of loosened up a little bit. I think, believe it or not, a twisted ankle actually helped my performance today. The doc gave me some painkillers and then I felt I was serving that last set some of the best I’ve served in a long time. Super happy to get the win and looking forward to the next one."

British No.1 Jack Draper also got off to a winning start, knocking out recent Hassan Grand Prix II runner-up Tallon Griekspoor 6-3, 6-4. The LTA notes that Draper wasted no time in clinching his third-round spot up against an in-form opponent in Netherlands’ Griekspoor, with the world No.6 needing just a single break in both sets to see out the win. Draper will face former Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini in the next round, having won both previous meetings between the two players.

Meanwhile, Cam Norrie built on his opening-round win with an upset of his own, knocking out 26th seed Jiri Lehecka 2-6, 6-4, 6-0. The LTA reports that Norrie was on the back foot early on, having been broke to love in his opening service game, but the 29-year-old came to life in the second set. Norrie managed to level the scores on serve after breaking Lehecka on the first game and once he got ahead in the third, there was no looking back. In one of his best performances of the season so far, Norrie reeled off the final seven straight games to clinch a hard-fought win.

The LTA confirms that Norrie will face Canadian Gabriel Diallo in the next round, while Fearnley and Draper will take on Grigor Dimitrov and Matteo Berrettini respectively. With this impressive showing, British tennis fans will be eagerly anticipating the next matches for these talented players.

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has been providing comprehensive coverage of the Mutua Madrid Open, and their in-depth analysis and reporting have highlighted the impressive performances of the British players. As reported by the LTA, the British trio’s progress to the third round is a significant achievement, and their continued success will be closely watched by tennis fans around the world.
