Peaky Blinders Set to Return as TV Series with Big Change
A new season of the hit British period crime drama, Peaky Blinders, is reportedly on its way, three years after it was initially thought to have ended. According to a report, the show’s creator, Steven Knight, has been working on a new series set in the 1950s, which is due to start filming this summer. The news was first reported by Metro.co.uk, which has learned that BBC bosses are keen to get the episodes ready to air next year.
The show, which originally ran from 2013 until 2022, follows the exploits of the Peaky Blinders gang in Birmingham after the First World War. The series starred Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby and was a huge hit for the BBC. As Metro.co.uk previously reported, Knight had teased that the door had been left open for the story to continue, saying: "It’s not over. Let’s just put it that way. I’m not allowed to announce it, but I’m just saying that the world of Peaky will continue."
The upcoming Peaky Blinders movie, set during the Second World War, will see Cillian Murphy reprise his role as Tommy Shelby. However, it’s believed that the new TV series will take place in the 1950s and could see Murphy return as a "father figure" to younger gang members. Metro.co.uk understands that the show’s production team is eager to capitalize on a renewed wave of interest in the series after the release of the feature film later this year.
The sixth series of Peaky Blinders was initially supposed to be the last, but Knight’s comments and the new report suggest that the show’s story is far from over. A source told Metro.co.uk‘s partner publication, The Sun: "The sixth series of Peaky Blinders was supposed to be the last and the movie was meant to be the final farewell for the story. But show boss Steven Knight couldn’t resist coming back to the story — his most famous creation — and he’s been dropping hints he wanted to return to do more."
The BBC declined to comment on the report, but Metro.co.uk can confirm that pre-production on the new series is underway. Fans of the show will be thrilled to hear that the world of Peaky Blinders will continue, with Knight’s creation remaining one of the most popular and critically acclaimed shows on British television.
In related news, Cillian Murphy expressed his excitement about returning to the role of Tommy Shelby in the upcoming movie, saying: "It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me. It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans." Metro.co.uk readers can currently stream Peaky Blinders on BBC iPlayer and Netflix.
