Brazil’s Last Supercentenarian, Sister Inah, Dies at 116

Brazilian Nun and Football Fan Celebrates 116th Birthday Before Passing

A 116-year-old Brazilian nun, Sister Inah, has passed away in the city of Porto Alegre, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, faith, and a love for football. According to reports from the BBC, Sister Inah’s nephew stated that the elderly nun had not suffered from any illness, but her body had "gradually stopped" working.

Sister Inah was a member of the Teresian Sisters, a religious community she had been part of for many years. She passed away at a home belonging to the community, surrounded by her loved ones. The 116-year-old was a keen football fan and had celebrated her 116th birthday in style, wearing the scarf of her favourite team, Sport Club Internacional.

As reported by the BBC, Sister Inah’s love for football was evident in her extensive collection of Internacional shirts and pillows adorned with the team’s logo. Her family and friends described her as a kind and devout person who enjoyed sticking to a routine. "She liked to get up, eat, and pray and sleep at the same time each day," her relatives told Brazilian TV, as reported by the BBC.

Sister Rita Fernandes Barbosa, a co-ordinator at the religious home where Sister Inah lived, paid tribute to the elderly nun, saying that she had enjoyed good health for most of her life. According to Sister Rita, Sister Inah had not had any surgeries until she underwent a cataract operation at the age of 106. The BBC reported that towards the end of her life, Sister Inah had difficulty hearing and seeing, but she continued to live a peaceful and fulfilling life.

Sport Club Internacional paid tribute to Sister Inah on social media, posting a message of condolence on X, saying it had learned "with enormous sadness of her passing" and celebrated her life, which it said was based on kindness, faith, and love of the football club. The team described Sister Inah as a loyal and dedicated fan, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of the team’s supporters.

The BBC reported that Sister Inah’s family and friends will miss her dearly, but they take comfort in the knowledge that she lived a long and happy life. Her legacy serves as an inspiration to people of all ages, showing that with kindness, faith, and a love for life, one can live a full and meaningful life. As Sister Inah’s story comes to a close, her memory will live on, and her love for football will continue to inspire others.

The news of Sister Inah’s passing has been met with an outpouring of tributes from the football community and beyond. Her remarkable life serves as a testament to the power of faith, kindness, and a love for life. According to the BBC, Sister Inah’s story is a reminder that life is precious, and every moment should be cherished. As the world says goodbye to this remarkable woman, her legacy will continue to inspire and uplift others for generations to come.
