Oxfordshire Local Elections 2025: By-Election Results Announced

A series of by-elections were held across Oxfordshire on May 1, with results announced today. The elections were called following a number of vacancies on local councils, including Oxford City Council, Cherwell District Council, West Oxfordshire District Council, and South Oxfordshire District Council.

According to the Oxford Mail, a by-election was held in the Headington Hill and Northway ward for Oxford City Council, with Labour’s James William John Taylor elected after receiving 461 votes. The seat was gained from the Independents, with Nasreen Majeed of the Independent Oxford Alliance receiving the second highest number of votes with 445. Stephen Robert Hurt of the Green Party came in third with 158 votes.

In Cherwell, the Conservatives and Labour achieved good results. For the Banbury Cross and Neithrop ward of Cherwell District Council, the Conservatives gained a seat from Labour with Fiaz Ahmed receiving 729 votes. Andrew Eaton from Labour received 690 votes. The Oxford Mail reports that Simon Garrett of the Independents came in second with 412 votes, and Rebecca Bell of the Liberal Democrats received 358 votes.

The Labour party retained its seat in the Banbury Grimsbury and Hightown ward, with Henry Elugwu receiving 639 votes, ahead of the Conservatives’ Paul Austin who received 600. The Conservatives held its seat in the Deddington ward, with Zoe McLernon receiving 1,560 votes, ahead of the Lib Dems’ Nick Mylne, who received 916 votes.

In West Oxfordshire, the Lib Dems retained its seat in the Standlake Ason and Stanton Harcourt by-election, with Sandra Cosier receiving 725 votes. This by-election was triggered by Charlie Maynard, now MP for Witney, stepping down. The Oxford Mail reports that Lysette Nicholls of the Conservatives received 592 votes, Richard Langridge of Reform received 337, Dan Eisenhandler of the Green party received 58, and Sian O’Neill of Labour received 28.

The Lib Dems also retained its seat in the Watlington ward of South Oxfordshire District Council, with Benjamin James Higgins receiving 679 votes. This by-election was triggered after Freddie van Mierlo, now MP for Henley and Thame, stepped down. The Lib Dems were ahead of Anthony Richard Riley of the Conservative party, who received 585 votes.

A Wantage Neighbourhood Planning Referendum for the Vale of White Horse District Council was also held, with 2780 votes cast in favour. A total of 437 people voted no, and the turnout was 30.6 per cent.

As reported by the Oxford Mail, voter turnout across the by-elections ranged from 27.64 per cent to 44.34 per cent. The results of these by-elections provide insight into the current state of local politics in Oxfordshire.
