Reform Gains Momentum with Twin Mayoral Victories in Hull and East Yorkshire

The Mayoral Election Results in Full

Sky News has reported that Reform has won two of this year’s six mayoral contests, marking the party’s first ever mayors. The elections, which took place recently, saw four combined authority mayors, also known as metro mayors, and two city mayors up for election.

According to Sky News, two of the mayors will take up new positions, in Hull and East Yorkshire, and Greater Lincolnshire combined authorities. The other mayoralties were all last contested in 2021. The elections were held under a first-past-the-post electoral system, which is also used for Westminster parliamentary elections.

The metro mayors were elected in combined authorities, with voters from several different areas casting their ballots. The results for each race are as follows:

  • Cambridgeshire and Peterborough: Conservative Paul Bristow has won the race to be Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Mayor, with 60,243 votes to the Reform candidate’s 49,647. The combined authority covers six areas: Peterborough, Fenland, Huntingdonshire, East Cambridgeshire, South Cambridgeshire, and Cambridge local council areas. As Sky News notes, Labour won the mayoralty from the Conservatives when it was last contested in 2021, but dropped to third place this year.

As the source reports, in Greater Lincolnshire, Reform’s Andrea Jenkyns has won the race to be Greater Lincolnshire’s first mayor, with 104,133 votes to the Conservative candidate’s 64,585. The combined authority covers nine areas: North Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire, Boston, Lincoln, East Lindsey, West Lindsey, North Kesteven, South Kesteven, and South Holland local council areas.

In Hull and East Yorkshire, former Olympic gold medallist boxer Luke Campbell has won the race for Reform to be Hull and East Yorkshire’s first ever mayor. He won comfortably with a majority of 10,981 votes (35.8%) followed by the Lib Dems (27.7%), the Conservatives (15.8%) and Labour (13.7%). The combined authority area covers both Hull City and East Riding of Yorkshire local council areas.

The West of England mayoralty was also contested, with Labour holding onto the position but with a reduced majority. As Sky News states, Labour won the mayoralty from the Conservatives when it was last contested in 2021 by a margin of 12,019 votes. This year, their margin has been cut in half to just under 6,000 votes. The combined authority covers three areas: Bristol City, South Gloucestershire, and Bath and North East Somerset local council areas.

In terms of city mayors, Labour’s Ros Jones, who has been the Mayor of Doncaster since 2013, has been re-elected, but came just 698 votes ahead of the Reform candidate. In North Tyneside, Labour have managed to hold onto the mayoralty with an even thinner majority of just 444 votes, with Reform coming in second place.

The results of the mayoral elections provide valuable insights into the shifting landscape of British politics. As reported by Sky News, the elections saw significant gains for Reform, including the party’s first ever mayors in Hull and East Yorkshire, and Greater Lincolnshire. The results also highlight the continued strength of Labour in certain areas, as well as the Conservatives’ ability to hold onto key positions.

Overall, the mayoral election results demonstrate the complex and often unpredictable nature of British politics. As the country continues to navigate the challenges of the modern era, the results of these elections provide a valuable snapshot of the current state of the nation.
