Kane’s Bundesliga Title Hopes Dashed Again

Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga title celebrations delayed after RB Leipzig snatch draw

Bayern Munich’s title celebrations have been delayed after RB Leipzig snatched a 3-3 draw on Saturday, with Yussuf Poulsen scoring a stoppage-time goal to leave the league leaders on 76 points. According to The Guardian, this result means Bayern are now nine points ahead of Leverkusen, who travel to Freiburg on Sunday.

The Guardian reports that Bayern will secure their 34th league crown if Leverkusen fail to win. However, it was a far from straightforward afternoon for the Bundesliga leaders, who found themselves on the back foot from the start. Leipzig piled on early pressure, with Benjamin Sesko completing a quick break with a superbly curled shot past Jonas Urbig in the 11th minute.

Leipzig’s pressure paid off again six minutes before the break when Lukas Klostermann easily beat his marker to head in a David Raum free-kick and double Leipzig’s lead. As The Guardian notes, Bayern were toothless in attack, with Harry Kane – the Bundesliga’s leading scorer – watching from the stands due to a suspension.

Bayern did manage to turn things around after the break, with Eric Dier heading in Michael Olise’s corner at the near post and Olise rifling in the equaliser a minute later. However, they thought they had done enough to secure the title when Leroy Sané struck seven minutes from time. That was until Poulsen spoiled the party with a stoppage-time goal.

The draw was not the only concerning development for Bayern, as The Guardian reports that Heidenheim goalkeeper Kevin Müller and Bochum forward Philipp Hofmann are recovering in hospital after being seriously injured on Friday. Müller has a concussion after being knocked unconscious in a collision with Bochum’s Ibrahima Sissoko, while Hofmann broke a rib causing a collapsed lung after a collision with Heidenheim’s Marvin Pieringer.

In other European news, Inter maintained their Serie A title hopes with a 1-0 home win over Verona on Saturday, courtesy of an early penalty by Kristjan Asllani. As The Guardian notes, this result keeps the Scudetto race ticking over, with Inter on 74 points, three behind the leaders, Napoli.

Napoli earlier won 1-0 at Lecce, and Inter will look to close the gap in the final three rounds. The Guardian reports that Inter’s semi-final return leg at home to Barcelona on Tuesday is a significant challenge, and they rested players ahead of that match.

In Spain, Atlético Madrid’s fading hopes of winning the La Liga title suffered a potentially grievous blow on Saturday when they were held to a goalless draw by relegation-threatened Alavés. As The Guardian notes, Barcelona extended the gap atop La Liga to seven points with a 2-1 comeback win at relegated Real Valladolid.

A second-string Paris Saint-Germain side fell to a 2-1 defeat at fourth-placed Strasbourg, another loss for the Ligue 1 champions who face Arsenal in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday.
