Agent Blasts ‘BS’ Explanation for Ewers’ Slide to Round 7

Quinn Ewers’ Draft Slide Sparks Controversy: Agent Slams NFL Teams for “Chickenshit” Behaviour

In a shocking turn of events, Quinn Ewers, a highly touted college quarterback, was drafted by the Miami Dolphins with the 231st overall pick in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL draft. Ewers’ agent, Ron Slavin, has spoken out about the quarterback’s drastic slide, revealing that several teams had him rated much higher than his eventual draft position. According to a report from NBC Sports, Slavin reached out to “half the league” to understand why Ewers fell so far.

“We thought he was a third- or fourth-round pick, but too big of a name to be a clipboard holder,” Slavin told Todd Archer of ESPN.com, as quoted by NBC Sports. “Which I think is chickenshit.” This candid assessment from Slavin highlights the challenges faced by top college quarterbacks in the NIL era, where players with significant endorsement deals and attention can make it difficult for teams to draft them as backup quarterbacks.

The NIL era has created a unique dynamic in the NFL draft, where teams are hesitant to select high-profile quarterbacks as developmental players. As NBC Sports reports, if a big-name college quarterback doesn’t get drafted high enough to be a starter, it becomes difficult for teams to draft him to be a developmental quarterback. This phenomenon was evident in Ewers’ case, where his high profile and endorsement deals likely contributed to his slide down the draft board.

Ewers’ situation is further complicated by his decision not to return to college football for another year, forgoing millions of dollars in potential earnings. As quoted by NBC Sports, Ewers will now receive a slotted contract as one of the last players selected in the draft. In Miami, he will sit behind Tua Tagovailoa and backup Zach Wilson, making it a challenging path to becoming a starter.

The Dolphins’ quarterback room is currently led by Tua Tagovailoa, who has two more years of fully-guaranteed compensation remaining on his contract. This makes it unlikely that Ewers will be able to leapfrog Wilson, at least not until 2027. As reported by NBC Sports, Ewers’ agent, Ron Slavin, believes that teams were hesitant to draft his client due to his high profile and potential endorsement deals.

In conclusion, Quinn Ewers’ draft slide has sparked controversy, with his agent, Ron Slavin, criticising NFL teams for their “chickenshit” behaviour. As highlighted by NBC Sports, the NIL era has created new challenges for teams and players alike, making it difficult for top college quarterbacks to find a role as developmental players. Ewers’ situation serves as a prime example of this phenomenon, and it will be interesting to see how his career unfolds in the coming years. According to NBC Sports, only time will tell if Ewers can overcome the obstacles and achieve success in the NFL.
