Bucky Barnes’ Future as a Congressman Revealed: Sebastian Stan Weighs In
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, actor Sebastian Stan shed light on the future of his character Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). As reported by Comic Book Movie, Stan discussed whether Bucky’s days as a Congressman are over, following the events of the movie Thunderbolts*.
According to Comic Book Movie, in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes finally moved on from his past as a HYDRA assassin. The Comic Book Movie report also noted that Captain America: Brave New World later revealed that he had set out to become a United States Congressman. In Thunderbolts*, Bucky is serving in Congress, representing his constituents in Brooklyn, New York, but finds that effecting positive change isn’t easy due to governmental bureaucracy and red tape.
As Comic Book Movie previously reported, the movie ends with the hero leading the New Avengers alongside Yelena Belova. This development has led fans to speculate about Bucky’s future as a Congressman. Stan told Comic Book Movie that Bucky’s days as a Congressman may be numbered. "Yeah, it’s almost like crossing it out, right?" he said. "He’s still been trying to find his way of how he can contribute in a way that he hasn’t before. Ultimately, he realizes, ‘No, I am who I am, and I do things how I do them, and I should just do that.’"
Stan also shared his thoughts on Bucky’s character development, as reported by Comic Book Movie. "It was interesting because, after the TV show Falcon and the Winter Soldier, I think we got him further along in a good head space where I feel he is now just finally realizing how to incorporate some of those Winter Soldier characteristics and get a handle on them," he explained. "And so it was fun bringing back some of those moments with the new Bucky that we’ve established and to find the humor and the cool, dangerous factor as well. That was nice."
Meanwhile, Comic Book Movie reported that Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier had a more definitive answer regarding Bucky’s political career. According to Schreier, Bucky’s political career is "pretty well done." The filmmaker noted that "he’s found a new place that makes much more sense for him."
Bucky and his fellow New Avengers are set to be front and centre in Avengers: Doomsday, so there’s still plenty more for Stan to do with this character. Some fans speculated that his becoming a Congressman might lead to a U.S. Presidential run, but it seems more likely that Bucky will be kicking butt instead of lounging around the Oval Office.
Thunderbolts* brings together an unconventional team of antiheroes, including Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker.
