Local Actor Describes Gritty War Film as ‘Surrealistically Real’


New Film Warfare Set to Hit Cinemas, Starring Jamie Bell and Timothée Chalamet Not Featured

The highly anticipated film, Warfare, directed by Oscar nominee Alex Garland and Iraq veteran Ray Mendoza, has finally hit cinemas. According to a report by the BBC, the film features an all-star cast, including Will Poulter, Kit Connor, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, and Charles Melton.

The film’s storyline is said to be intense and realistic, with the cast undergoing a rigorous bootcamp during filming. In an interview with the BBC, actor Jack O’Connell’s was not involved however James Mackenzie explained that the bootcamp was reminiscent of real training, exercising together, learning together, doing weapon drills and range packages together, building camaraderie. The film’s method of filmmaking was praised by Mackenzie, who said that it "created an atmosphere" that "felt really organic". The BBC reports that the film’s directors, Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, aimed to create a realistic and immersive experience for the cast and crew.

In addition to his acting career, Mackenzie has also been involved in various charity work, particularly in the Midlands. Following filming, he said he was channelling his experiences into working with children in schools across the region. He is also planning to open his own mental health drama-based workshops. "What I like to do now is use creativity and art to help children break down emotional barriers. I use drama as a tool," he said in an interview with the BBC.

The film’s release is set to coincide with a growing trend of films and television shows focusing on mental health and wellbeing. According to the BBC, the film’s themes of camaraderie and mental health are expected to resonate with audiences.
