Abruzzo’s Farmers and Citizens Unite to Demand Action on Wildlife Management
A growing crisis in rural Abruzzo has prompted the region’s agricultural community to take a stand and demand action from authorities. Farmers and citizens are set to gather in the regional capital, L’Aquila, on May 13th to protest the ineffective management of wildlife in the region. The protest, backed by major agricultural associations, including Cia Abruzzo, Confagricoltura Abruzzo, Copagri Abruzzo, and Liberi Agricoltori Abruzzo, aims to bring attention to the devastating impact of uncontrolled wildlife on agricultural businesses and local communities.
According to reports from Onda TV, the region’s agricultural sector is facing significant challenges due to the lack of effective wildlife management. The protest will feature over 50 tractors, symbolizing the agricultural work that participants want to protect. A document outlining ten key proposals has been drawn up by the agricultural associations, which has already gained approval from numerous local councils. The proposals will be presented to regional authorities, including the President of the Region, Marco Marsilio, and the Vice President, Emanuele Imprudente.
The demands of the protesters include the implementation of a regional plan to control the wild boar population, with a target of 28,000 culls in 2024. However, this target has yet to be met, according to Onda TV. The associations are also calling for the unblocking of the Cervidae plan, which is currently suspended, and the coordinated management of wolf populations, including measures to prevent hybridization and protect livestock.
Other demands include action against other harmful species, such as nutria, foxes, and starlings, as well as improved compensation for farmers who have suffered damage to their crops. The protesters are also seeking to strengthen active defense measures, including the use of fencing and deterrents. An online petition in support of the protest has garnered over 3,000 signatures in just a few days, demonstrating widespread backing for the cause.
The following day, May 14th, a delegation from the agricultural associations will appear before the TAR (Regional Administrative Court) in L’Aquila to argue for the legitimacy of a decree allowing the culling of 469 deer. Onda TV reports that the protesters are seeking concrete solutions to the crisis, with one spokesperson stating, "Basta promesse: servono soluzioni concrete. Non c’è più tempo per rinvii o promesse." ("Enough promises: we need concrete solutions. There is no more time for delays or promises.")
The events of May 13th and 14th are seen as crucial to the future of Abruzzo’s agricultural sector. As Onda TV notes, the protests offer an opportunity for the region’s farmers and citizens to voice their concerns and demand action from authorities. The issue is not merely about agricultural production but also about preserving the region’s natural heritage and ensuring the long-term sustainability of rural communities.
The planned actions have been extensively covered by Onda TV, highlighting the complexities of wildlife management in Abruzzo and the urgent need for effective solutions. As the region’s agricultural community prepares to take a stand, the eyes of the nation are on Abruzzo, awaiting a response from regional authorities.
