Avril Lavigne and Simple Plan Team Up for Nostalgic Pop-Punk Anthem "Young and Dumb"
In a surprise move, Avril Lavigne and Simple Plan have joined forces to release a new single, "Young and Dumb", which dropped on Friday, May 9. The catchy tune takes fans on a trip down memory lane, revisiting the early 2000s pop-punk explosion that defined a generation.
According to Billboard, the song’s lyrics are a nostalgic ode to the era, with Lavigne singing, "2002 and I’m hangin’ on the tour bus/ Leavin’ my hometown, Napanee/ Rockin’ a necktie, black eyeliner/ White tank top and I’m chasin’ my dreams." The Billboard article notes that the song is a sing-along that will transport fans back to the beginning of the pop-punk movement.
The collaboration takes a turn with Simple Plan frontman Pierre Bouvier taking over on the second verse, fast-forwarding to the genre’s resurgence in the current decade. As Billboard reports, Bouvier insists, "I’m just a kid, still a pop-punk skater/ They told me, ‘Get a job’/ But I said, ‘No way!’" The song’s music video, which accompanies the single, features Lavigne and Simple Plan taking over a vintage motel, performing in an empty pool and running amok around the property on a bellhop’s cart.
The Billboard article states that Lavigne and Simple Plan will be hitting the road together for the latest leg of Lavigne’s Greatest Hits Tour, which kicks off May 25 in Bangor, Maine. To celebrate the release of "Young and Dumb", Lavigne took over Billboard‘s Instagram Stories from the set of the music video with Simple Plan.
As quoted in the Billboard article, a behind-the-scenes teaser shows Lavigne giving fans a glimpse inside her tour bus, where the Simple Plan guys are lounging in the bunks. In the teaser, Bouvier can be seen telling the camera, "Oh hey, I was sleepin’," after Lavigne interrupts his power nap.
