Avril Lavigne Releases New Single Giving Shoutout to Hometown Napanee
Avril Lavigne has released a new single, "Young & Dumb", which pays homage to her hometown of Napanee, Ontario. The song, which was released on May 9 to her official YouTube page, features lyrics that mention her early days in the music business and her departure from Napanee to pursue her dreams.
According to the Napanee Beaver, Lavigne’s new single is reminiscent of the pop-punk style that catapulted her to fame in the early 2000s with hits like "Sk8 Boi". The song features Montreal’s Simple Plan and marks Lavigne’s first new single since 2003’s "Fake As Hell", which featured the band All Time Low. As the Napanee Beaver reports, "Young & Dumb" is a nostalgic look back at Lavigne’s teenage years, with lyrics that include "2002 and I’m hanging on the tour bus / Leaving my hometown, Napanee (Bye) / Rocking a neck tie, black eye liner / White tank top and I’m chasing my dreams, yeah".
This is not the first time Lavigne has referenced her hometown in her music. As noted by the Napanee Beaver, her debut album in 2002 included the song "My World", where she recalled the time she was fired from Dixie Lee, ‘all in a small town, Napanee’. She also gives a nod to her roots in the song "Breakaway", which she wrote but gave to Kelly Clarkson. The song begins with the lyrics: "Grew up in a small town / And when the rain would fall down / I’d just stare out my window".
The Napanee Beaver reports that Lavigne has a long history of showing her hometown pride. In 2003, she wore a t-shirt from Napanee featuring the Home Hardware logo during her famous first appearance on Saturday Night Live, igniting a frenzy of t-shirt sales and visits to the area from her fans. In 2011, she returned to town to officially unveil a display case featuring some of her career highlights, which can be found at the Best and Bash Arena.
Lavigne is set to head out on the road later this month with shows across the U.S. and a handful of stops in Canada.
