Sky Sports Anchor Abruptly Departs Amid Reports of On-Air Shake-Up

Sky Sports News Favourite Reveals He’s Quit as Well-Known Reporters Face the Axe

A popular Sky Sports News reporter, Alan Myers, has announced that he is leaving the broadcaster after 23 years of service. The news comes as Sky Sports News is set to make a number of well-known staff redundant as they look to transform the channel.

According to the Daily Mail, Myers revealed his decision to leave Sky Sports News on social media, stating that it was a "difficult decision but one that I felt was right." The Daily Mail also reported that Myers had a "fantastic experience" working for Sky Sports News, covering major events such as World Cup finals and European Cup finals.

Myers, who was largely based in the North-West and North-East during his time at Sky, covered several major football clubs including Manchester City, Newcastle, Liverpool, and Everton. He also had the opportunity to report on Paul Gascoigne during his brief spell at Everton and spoke to Joe Royle, the last manager to win a trophy with the Toffees.

The news of Myers’ departure comes just over a week after shocked staff were told at Sky’s London headquarters that a round of redundancies is imminent. The Daily Mail reported that insiders have insisted that the move is not a cost-cutting measure, but rather aimed at "making us more agile and better equipped to serve audiences." A Sky Sports News spokesperson stated that the restructuring is intended to ensure that the department adapts to meet the changing behaviours of audiences and is "faster, more flexible and more creative."

The spokesperson also confirmed that a small number of roles are impacted, and the company is now entering a period of consultation with those colleagues. This is not the first time Sky Sports has undergone redundancies, with Geoff Shreeves, Martin Tyler, and Bianca Westwood among the talent to leave Sky Sports in 2023 due to job cutting.

As the Daily Mail previously reported, experienced and well-respected journalists including Guy Havord, Dickie Davis, Greg Whelan, and Jaydee Dyer were also affected by the cuts. The redundancies are limited to presenters and reporters, and the company insists that Sky Sports News, which is the UK’s only 24/7 sports news channel, will continue to focus on breaking news stories and that output will not be significantly altered.

In his post announcing his departure, Myers wrote: "After a 23 year association I have decided to leave Sky Sports News. Difficult decision but one that I felt was right. It’s been such a fantastic experience from my first report at a Bolton Wanderers outwood bound course, to World Cup Finals, ECL Finals and everything in between! I couldn’t wish to have worked for a better company with the most talented and professional colleagues. I thank every one of them for their support and friendship over many years."

The news of Myers’ departure and the impending redundancies has sent shockwaves through the sports broadcasting industry. As the media landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how Sky Sports News will adapt to meet the changing needs of its audience.
