Dalziel and McFadden Query PFA Rule Over Rodgers Snub

Celtic Boss Brendan Rodgers Misses Out on PFA’s Manager of the Year Award

The recent PFA awards saw Daizen Maeda take home the main prize, while Lennon Miller won the young player’s award. However, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was notably absent from the top spot, despite leading his team to a successful season. According to reporting from 67hailhail.com, Rodgers was nominated for the manager’s prize but ultimately lost out to Falkirk’s Championship promotion-winning boss, John McGlynn.

The decision was discussed by the Open Goal panel, with pundits Gordon Dalziel and James McFadden questioning the timing of the awards. As per the source, they argued that the votes are cast before the end of the season, which can lead to controversy. Dalziel stated, “The votes are different. It’s like Player of the Year. The votes are in (early). You can’t take into consideration that it’s easy to win a Treble. It’s a magnificent achievement.” He further added, “It’s unfortunate for the PFA, because it’s always earlier, isn’t it?! Sometimes, you look at a player with a really great run at the end of the season, then it gets to the end of the season and you go, ‘he wasn’t even in Team of the Year’, so it’s a difficult one.”

McFadden also weighed in on the discussion, saying, “See, when the votes are in or counted. Falkirk could have lost, and McGlynn would have still got Manager of the Year.” The duo believes that Rodgers’ achievement of potentially winning a Treble with Celtic should be recognised, and that he would have been their choice for Manager of the Year. As reported, Dalziel noted, “If he wins the Treble, then I think people would look and think, ‘how can a manager win a Treble and still not win Manager of the Year’ – if Celtic win the Treble, I would have gone for Rodgers (as Manager of the Year).”

The Open Goal panel’s comments highlight the challenges of voting for awards mid-season. With Celtic dominating Scottish football, including winning 14 out of the last 15 titles, some may argue that their success has become expected. However, Dalziel and McFadden’s points emphasise that winning a Treble is still a remarkable achievement that requires recognition.

The PFA’s decision to hold the awards before the end of the season may lead to controversy, as seen in this instance. According to 67hailhail.com, McFadden noted that the managers voting for the award may have their own biases, saying, “The big point is that the managers pick who they think is Manager of the Year. Everybody can get upset if they want, but they have picked who they feel has done a great job.”

As Celtic prepares to face Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final on May 24, Rodgers’ side is on course to complete a successful season. Despite missing out on the PFA’s Manager of the Year award, Rodgers will look to secure a Treble for his team. The discussion sparked by the Open Goal panel highlights the complexities of voting for awards in football, and the challenges of recognising outstanding achievements in a competitive and ever-changing sport.

The debate surrounding the PFA’s Manager of the Year award will likely continue, with Rodgers’ achievement and Celtic’s dominance in Scottish football sparking conversation among fans and pundits alike. As per reporting from 67hailhail.com, it remains to be seen how future awards will be structured and whether the voting process will be adjusted to account for the complexities of the football season.
