Former West Coast Eagles Premiership Player Adam Selwood Dies Aged 41
The Australian football community is in shock following the news that former West Coast Eagles premiership player Adam Selwood has died aged 41. According to a report by the ABC, Selwood passed away on Saturday, just months after his twin brother, former Brisbane Lions player Troy Selwood, died by suicide in early February.
Selwood played 187 games for West Coast from 2002 to 2013 and was part of the club’s successful 2006 premiership campaign. The ABC reports that no details have been released about the circumstances of his death.
The news of Selwood’s passing has sent shockwaves through the football community, with many of his former teammates and colleagues paying tribute to him. As reported by the ABC, his twin brother Troy Selwood’s fellow AFL-playing brothers — Adam, Joel, and Scott — delivered eulogies at his funeral at Kardinia Park on February 14.
In a statement released by the Selwood family, they expressed their grief and sadness at Adam’s passing, saying, “We are heartbroken by the passing of Adam earlier today. Words cannot express the grief and sadness we feel.” The family also requested privacy as they navigate this difficult time.
The West Coast Eagles have released a statement describing Selwood as a much-loved former player, coach, and staff member who made a profound and lasting contribution to the Eagles. The club’s head of football, John Worsfold, described Selwood as “the ultimate team man” who played whatever role was required and gave it his all.
As reported by the ABC, AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon said the “football industry” would unite to support the Selwood family. Dillon said, “Adam was a dearly loved son, brother, husband, and father and his loss is a tremendous blow for all who loved him.”
The AFL Players’ Association has also released a statement expressing their sincerest condolences to the Selwood family, saying, “The Selwoods are a much-loved and admired family and Adam was a man of enormous courage, spirit, and leadership.”
The West Coast Eagles will honour and pay tribute to Adam Selwood at tomorrow’s home game at Optus Stadium.
