Piastri’s Progress: Stella Spots Key Improvements Ahead of Senna Test

McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella has pinpointed where Oscar Piastri has improved as a driver, stating that the Australian’s increased speed has allowed him to process situations and information more effectively.

According to Stella, as quoted in an interview with Formula 1, “I think that’s the main thing in which he has improved, and by being a faster driver then this means he can have more space to process situations, process information, focus on the right details, because the foundation from a speed point of view is there, so that’s where I think Oscar has improved the most.”

Stella’s comments come as Piastri and his teammate Lando Norris continued to impress in practice sessions at Imola, with the McLaren duo topping the timesheets in both FP1 and FP2. Piastri was fractionally faster than Norris in each session, but both drivers were cautious about their chances for Qualifying on Saturday.

As Formula 1 reports, Stella is keen for the team to remain competitive at all venues this season, and believes that they have a good chance of winning a race based on their recent performances. “The chances of winning a race for a McLaren driver, based on the statistics over the previous races and based on the competitiveness that we saw even in Free Practice 1, remain high, and that’s good for us because that’s what we want,” he said.

Stella also noted that the team’s car seems to be performing well on circuits with low-speed corners, such as Miami, Bahrain, and China, but that Imola’s medium to high-speed corners will provide a different challenge. “We want to be competitive in every single circuit, even if I think circuits like Miami or Bahrain or China gave us a bit more opportunities because the car this year seems to be performing very well where we have low-speed corners, and here in Imola it is anything medium to high-speed corners so we will see,” he added.

As the season is only a quarter of the way through, Stella is urging his team to maintain their concentration and not become complacent. As Formula 1 reports, he said, “But it’s a very long season, we need to keep the concentration
