Liam Neeson Opens Up About Mother’s Heartbreaking Death

Liam Neeson Opens Up About Heartbreak of Losing Mother During COVID Pandemic

The renowned actor, Liam Neeson, has spoken about the painful moments in his life, including the loss of his mother, Katherine ‘Kitty’ Neeson, who passed away aged 94 in a nursing home in Ballymena, Northern Ireland in 2020. According to a report from the Irish Star, Neeson shared his heartbreak over her passing and the sad reason he never got to say a proper goodbye.

Katherine ‘Kitty’ Neeson passed away during the COVID pandemic in 2020, so strict regulations meant Neeson could not attend the funeral in person. The Taken star has opened up about how the circumstances surrounding her death affected him. His beloved mother died during a time when travel restrictions and the introduction of a 14-day quarantine for anyone entering the country meant Neeson and his two sons Micheál (25) and Daniel (24) were unable to attend the funeral.

The Schindler’s List star has shared his heartbreak over her passing and the sad reason he never got to say a proper goodbye in an interview with Sunday Life. “I lost my mother last June, and it was strange for Micheál and myself and Micheál’s brother Daniel, for the three of us to be here looking at my mother’s funeral via a computer screen,” he told the outlet in 2021.

Neeson explained that it was a surreal experience for him and his sons to watch the funeral from his home in the US via an internet link. “That was kind of strange – it was kind of surreal. But before my mum passed away, we would go back – I would go back – twice a year perhaps,” he continued. “And Micheál and Danny once every other year or something like that.”

A popular presence in the local community, Kitty was fondly remembered as a kind and warm woman who had worked as a dinner lady at the local St Louis School. Her death came just as the UK was beginning to emerge from its first lockdown. Neeson and his sons were unable to attend the funeral due to travel restrictions, and instead gathered to watch the funeral from Neeson’s home in the US via an internet link.

The actor has also spoken about the passing of his beloved wife, Natasha Richardson, who died in 2009 after a skiing accident. Liam’s legion of fans has praised his incredible work ethic for getting straight back to filming after his beloved wife Natasha died – as they marveled at his net worth – an estimated $145 million. After becoming a household name making back-to-back action films, fans have examined the sad reason the treasured actor does not stop working.

Fans have taken to Reddit to marvel at just how Neeson continues to work while dealing with personal tragedy. One fan said: “Just days after Richardson’s death, Neeson started working again. As he explained to Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes: ‘I’m not good without work. I just didn’t want to, especially for my boys, to seem to be wallowing in sadness or depression.'”

Neeson’s ability to cope with loss and continue working has left fans in awe. A second fan said: “He has a net worth of $145 million so money is not all of it. I think he does it because he enjoys it. Have fun on set and get paid for it. Not a bad life.” A third fan added: “He’s making a living. Personally, I don’t think the guy has had his heart in it since his wife died, and it’s entirely understandable. Make money, set yourself up and leave when you’re ready.”

The Irish Star report highlights the challenges Neeson faced during the pandemic, including the loss of his mother and the inability to attend her funeral in person. The actor’s story serves as a testament to his strength and resilience in the face of adversity.
