Scotland on Brink of Record-Breaking Sunshine – The Scottish Sun
Scotland continued to bask in warm weather over the weekend, bringing the country closer to breaking the record for the sunniest spring on record. According to The Scottish Sun, the current spell of sunny weather is expected to continue until Thursday, potentially making 2025 the sunniest spring since records began in 1910.
The Scottish Sun reports that spring is officially measured by the months of March, April, and May, and that the country has already exceeded the number of sunshine hours seen in the whole of last summer. Thousands of people have been enjoying the great outdoors, with city beer gardens and pavement cafes bursting at the seams with sun-seekers.
The warm weather has also led to an accumulation of blue-green algae at the boating pond of Rouken Glen Park in Giffnock, East Renfrewshire. The local council has advised people to keep away from the water and not to allow pets to enter the contaminated area, as it can cause illness and even death to animals.
On a lighter note, some people have been making the most of the weather, with Ben Girdwood hiking up to Cairn Lochain in the Cairngorms to ski on the only decent patch of snow left in the mountains. “After all the hot weather recently, I was amazed that there was still a patch of snow big enough to be able to ski on,” he said.
Glasgow Airport recorded a temperature of 23C on Sunday, after the city recorded 24.8C the day before. The Scottish Sun reports that the sunshine expected between now and Thursday should be enough to create unprecedented sunny spring weather since records began.
However, the Met Office long-range weather forecast states that a change in weather type is expected from Friday until the end of May, with more unsettled conditions likely to develop, bringing spells of rain and strong winds. “As we head into the bank holiday weekend and following week, a change in weather type is expected,” the forecast states. “More unsettled conditions are likely to develop, with weather systems moving in from the Atlantic.”
The forecast also states that “drier and brighter intervals are likely between systems, but with showers, some of which could be heavy thunder.” Temperatures will probably be close to average, perhaps slightly above at times, but will feel fairly cool in the often strong winds.
In related news, ferry operator Cal Mac reported a two-hour queue for cars trying to cross from Largs to Millport and a 30-minute wait for foot passengers on Saturday. Thousands also flocked to beaches over the weekend, with crowded beaches and sunny weather making for a perfect combination.
For those looking to make the most of the weather, here is the UK 5-day weather forecast:
* This evening and tonight: A blanket of cloud returns to eastern and central areas overnight with a little drizzle over eastern hills. Feeling chilly beneath clear skies in the west with some patchy fog forming by dawn.
* Monday: Cloudy at first, but turning brighter with warm, sunny spells developing for most. Mainly dry, though showers bubbling up in the west, perhaps turning heavy or thundery during the afternoon.
* Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday: Sunshine and showers for some on Tuesday and Wednesday, these perhaps heavy and thundery at times. Drier on Thursday with bright or sunny spells. Locally chilly overnight.
