Tim Roth on Grief: ‘There’s No Cure’

Grief and Resilience: Tim Roth Opens Up About Loss and His Latest Film

Renowned actor Tim Roth sat down with The Guardian to discuss his latest film, Poison, and the profound impact of grief on his life. The film, directed by Désirée Nosbusch, tells the story of an estranged couple who reunite a decade after the death of their son, which must be exhumed due to toxins leaking into the cemetery. According to The Guardian, Roth’s performance in the film is a raw emotional duel shot almost entirely at a real Luxembourg cemetery.

Roth’s personal experience with grief has been all too real. In October 2022, his son Cormac died at the age of 25, just a few months after filming Poison wrapped. Cormac had been diagnosed with stage 3 germ cell cancer a year earlier. As reported by The Guardian, Roth had considered dropping out of the film, but Cormac urged him to continue with the project. "He was unfazed by me doing the film," Roth recalled. "He thought it was a good thing. He was probably wanting to get me out of the house as well."

The film Poison explores the complexities of grief and how individuals cope with loss in different ways. "There is no one way of grieving," Roth said, as quoted in The Guardian. "People react differently – everyone does – otherwise there would be a cure for it." The film’s portrayal of grief resonated deeply with Roth, who has been open about the pain of losing his son. "The film has such a truth to it because it shows that how you grieve is as individual as a fingerprint," he said.

Roth’s career has spanned decades and multiple genres, from art house films to blockbusters. He has worked with renowned directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Robert Altman, and Tim Burton. As noted by The Guardian, Roth’s passion for acting has always been evident on screen, and he has made a conscious decision to take on a wide range of roles. "I made a conscious decision very early on … that I wanted to be an actor and not a movie person," he said.

Despite his success, Roth has not been immune to challenges. He has spoken about the difficulties of navigating the film industry and the occasional bad experience. However, he has also expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he has had and the lessons he has learned. As reported by The Guardian, Roth has said that even the most difficult experiences can be valuable learning opportunities.

In addition to his film career, Roth has also been open about his personal life, including his experiences with politics and social issues. He has expressed concern about the rise of far-right populism and the potential dangers it poses. "It’s thoroughly depressing and heartbreaking," he said, as quoted in The Guardian. "It feels like he is the guy that opens the door for the real dangers … so even when he’s gone, I worry about what will be left behind."

Roth’s conversation with The Guardian was a poignant reminder of the complexities of life and the power of resilience. Despite facing unimaginable loss and uncertainty, he remains committed to his craft and to using his platform to raise awareness about important issues. As The Guardian reported, Poison is set to air on Sky Cinema on May 18, offering audiences a powerful and thought-provoking exploration of grief and human connection.
